Indo-German Centre for Sustainability
The Indo-German Centre for Sustainability, IGCS for short, was opened at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, IITM for short, in the south Indian city of Chennai in December 2010. This German-Indian center for sustainability is a cooperation between the IIT Madras and the TU9, the leading technical universities in Germany. It considers itself an interdisciplinary research and teaching center, at which German and Indian scientists and doctoral students work together in the fields of waste management, bioenergy, energy efficiency, development policy, renewable energies, and hydrology.
The German Academic Exchange Service or the DAAD, provides funding at the IGCS for four visiting lecturers in the fields of energy technology, waste management, water management and sustainable urban development and land use. There are also fellowships for researchers and doctoral students from India and Germany. The funds are from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research's initiative A New Passage to India.
