The second Tuesday in November marks Research Data Day in North Rhine Westphalia. The federal state initiative united the fdm.nrw and many universities and university associations in celebrating a state-wide day of action for Research Data Management (RDM) on November 14, 2023.

This year’s topic was "Promoting and Refining Data: Bring Your Data Treasure Trove to Light." The RDM team at RWTH and Forschungszentrum Jülich hosted an inspiring event in Aachen with lectures and networking focused on AI and RDM.

 

From Data to Diamonds – Empowering Research with AI and RDM

As the foundation of scientific knowledge, research data are a precious treasure trove for science. Digital progress and the development of new methods, for example in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), require professional RDM, and they in turn can also significantly contribute to the urgently needed and long overdue professionalization of RDM.

Anyone and everyone interested in RDM and/or AI from Aachen, Jülich, and beyond was invited to join the discussion on how RDM and AI can work together to support each other.

Lectures on RDM and AI

Experts from RWTH and Forschungszentrum Jülich discused the synergies between RDM and AI. They used specific examples to elaborate on this symbiotic relationship:

  • Lifting Data Treasures with AI: How does the use of AI algorithms enable the (automated) retrieval, preparation, and analysis of data for research?
  • Refining data through RDM: How can good RDM help produce and make available AI-ready research data, facilitating the use of AI methods?

Posters and Networking

Researchers and data stewards – including data officers, data managers, and others involved in data – offered insights into their work and presented use cases on RDM from their projects. The RDM Team at RWTH and the Central Library of Forschungszentrum Jülich also presented their RDM offerings, providing guidance on the infrastructure available at the respective sites.

The event provided an excellent opportunity to get in touch with other researchers, to learn about RDM infrastructure facilities, to share ideas, get inspired, and find others who are also tackling RDM challenges.

 

Further Details on Research Data Day

 

On Research Data Day in North Rhine-Westphalia, lectures, workshops, and networking events were held throughout the state, shedding light on all aspects of RDM. In a virtual, cross-location morning program, researchers and RDM experts reported on their experiences and presented best practices in RDM. RWTH was also part of the morning program, providing two contributions.

  • Coscine – Refining the Treasure Trove of Data With FAIR (Katja Jansen, IT Center of RWTH Aachen University)
