The Research Data Management team at RWTH offers various continuing education opportunities on research data management, such as instructional videos, e-learning courses to get you started, and in-depth advanced workshops on RWTH infrastructures.

 
 

RDM Educational Videos

Using a fictional story about squirrel research, researchers in the video series dive into the importance of good RDM in research projects. The story of Luise Leader and her colleagues shows how problems can arise even in scientifically successful projects if the handling of research data is not properly planned. This makes it difficult to use the data in the project as well as for further research.

This video series illustrates important aspects of RDM that facilitate collaboration in the research project and enable better follow-up use of research data in subsequent projects:

  • Why is it worthwhile to create a data management plan and what does it include?
  • What is metadata and what is its importance with regard to the data life cycle?
  • How is research data on publications archived or published?
  • What are the benefits of persistent identifiers (PIDs) in RDM?

Overview of Research Data Management (RDM I - online)

With this RWTHmoodle course, you can enter into the world of RDM at RWTH at any time in German or English. Based on the life cycle of research data, the course offers a compact introduction to essential aspects of RDM and an overview of the services and infrastructure offered by RWTH. You have to have participated in RDM I ito be able to attend all in-depth RDM II workshops.

Among other things, the course will cover the following topics and content:

  • Service and infrastructure offers of RWTH concerning RDM
  • RDM aspects of good scientific practice
  • FAIR principles
  • Data management plan
  • Documentation
  • Archiving and publication of research data

Git and GitLab E-learning courses

Git and GitLab are well-established tools for development, documentation and collaboration in software projects. Increasingly, they are also used in the context of RDM, as they are well suited for version management of text-based research data and for the supporting collaboration. The following courses are included in RWTHmoodle:

  • "Getting Started with Version Control with Git and GitLab" guides the installation of the tools on your own computer, helps you to set up a project and execute your first simple commands.
  • "Git Scavenger Hunt - a scavenger hunt with Git" trains the basic commands and processes of version management with Git in the form of a scavenger hunt.
  • "WordGuess - a collaborative game with Git and GitLab" will train you to work with Git and GitLab while focusing on project management.

Workshops

Building on the basic RDM I courses, various RDM II workshops are provided for the RWTH infrastructure offerings such as Coscine, RWTH Publications and RDMO as well as other relevant RDM topics. The contents of RDM I are strengthened by means of live demos, hands-on exercises and practical examples.

Working with colleagues helps you to reflect and optimize your working methods. The workshops are aimed at researchers at RWTH Aachen University and are part of the continuing education programs of the RWTH Center for Young Academics.

The RDM II workshops are offered in two formats:

  • RDM II-compact: One-day compact workshop with in-depth study of the essential RDM topics and familiarization with the RWTH tools: Workshop on research data management
  • RDM II-modular: Two-hour hands-on workshops on in-depth RDM topics. Every 3rd Wednesday of the month

Compact Workshop: Management of Research Data

The essential contents of RDM I - data management plan, documentation, data organization, archiving and publication - are strengthened by means of practical exercises and exchange between colleagues. This helps you to reflect on your own working methods and to optimize them if necessary.

Data Management Plan (DMP) Writing Workshop

The focus is on the practical use of the DMP in everyday scientific life. Questions such as "How do I write a DMP? How do I answer the questions in the DMP? How does a DMP support research?" will be addressed.

Publishing Fair Data

Research data should ideally be usable and accessible in the long term. Benefits and procedures are addressed that make it easier to publish the results of research as fair data.

Research Data Management in DFG Proposals - What Research Funders Expect

In this RDM II module, we address the DFG's expectations of RDM and what should be considered and stated at the proposal stage in order to submit a successful DFG application for support.

Using Wikidata – Basics of Knowledge Graphs Explained

Wikidata is the free knowledge base of the Wikimedia Foundation. A structured, machine-readable pool of data that anyone can edit and use. Therefore, it is a shining example of Open Knowledge and FAIR data in the semantic web: the data are findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable.

RDM Platform Coscine - More Than Just Free Storage!

The RDM platform Coscine will be presented, along with its RDM hands-on features. The course will demonstrate how Coscine helps to meet the requirements of research sponsors and comply with Good Scientific Practice.

Basics of Metadata and the Creation of Application Profiles in Coscine

This module covers the basic concepts of metadata and terminologies and it shows how to create custom application profiles using the application profile generator in Coscine.

Version Control with Git - is it the Right Tool for my Research Data?

In the workshop, simple Git commands are tried out in a hands-on manner and basic workflows are carried out. Working with Git in the console helps you to gain a basic understanding of the tool.

Documentation, Archiving and Publication of Research Data

PhD students bear the responsibility for their research data. The workshop supports you in handling research data according to the principles of good scientific practice and focuses on the topics of documentation, archiving and publication of research data.

Searching for Research Data

This module provides an overview of research tools that can be used when searching for research data. Participants will be shown how to develop specific search strategies for individual research projects.

Personal Data Management with Guerrilla Analytics

This hands-on workshop is inspired by the practical guidebook by Enda Ridge (2014): "Guerrilla Analytics - A practical approach to working with data". It provides recommendations and practices for organizing research data and designing work processes in data-intensive projects.
