SmartGrid Active Distribution Management System to accommodate Renewable Energy Sources and Low Carbon Emissions Targets
A critical challenge for electricity Smartgrids is to optimise Distribution System Operators’ (DSO) ROI and avoid grid instabilities with ever increasing Renewable Energy Sources. ADMS will continuously monitor the dynamic state of networks and potential grid instability right to the LV grid-edge. It will disruptively change how Europe’s 2,400 DSOs manage and control their networks to improve network stability by 20 percent and grid capacity by 25 percent, reduce networks outages duration and customer losses by 20 percent and enable 25 percent more renewable connections, to help achieve their 2020 carbon reduction targets.
Every year, the German National Contact Point for Information and Communication Technologies in Horizon 2020 (NCP ICT) presents selected EU projects coordinated by German institutions. These projects are characterized by a high societal impact and illustrate the diverse potential of artificial intelligence. In 2019, the NCP ICT portrayed twelve Horizon 2020 projects, including ADMS.
In 2021, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) published a report on EU research and innovation (R&I) projects in the field of smart grids funded by the European Commission. This report points out that, among universities, RWTH Aachen University has been the most successful applicant in the field of smart grids in the last years. On behalf of RWTH Aachen University, Prof. Antonello Monti, Ph.D. and his team from the Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems participated in 18 EU projects from which he coordinated three projects.
