Clusters of Excellence
The Clusters of Excellence established at selected German universities are internationally recognized, competitive research institutions which make it possible for scientists to conduct research and collaborate in an inspiring setting. They also provide excellent support and career opportunities for junior researchers.
The Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments is designed to bolster top-level research at Germany universities, enhance their research profiles and facilitate cooperation in the research system. Within the Excellence Strategy, project-based funding is provided for Clusters of Excellence in internationally competitive research fields.
Clusters of Excellence enable scientific networking and interdisciplinary collaboration. They are an important element of the strategic plan of the University and serve to substantially sharpen its profile.
Starting in January 2019, a total of 57 Clusters of Excellence with an average of 6.5 million Euros per year will be funded for an initial period of seven years; among these three are at RWTH Aachen University.
The Clusters of Excellence at the RWTH are listed below and cover research areas addressing future challenges of great societal relevance:

– Adaptive Conversion Systems for Renewable Energy and Carbon Sources - Internet of Production
- ML4Q – Matter and Light for Quantum Computing
