Researchers from different disciplines and faculties work together in Profile Areas in order to create a basis for socially relevant innovations from the findings of foundational and applied research. They coordinate their research activities, use state-of-the-art infrastructure, and create a large research network from partners in research and industry based in Germany and abroad.

The interdisciplinary research on the greatest problems in society today is divided into eight key research areas:

Computational Science & Engineering (CompSE)
The activities for the CompSE profile area are being undertaken at the JARA Center for Simulation and Data Science (JARA-CSD).

Energy, Chemical & Process Engineering (ECPE)

Information & Communication Technology (ICT)

Materials Science & Engineering (MatSE)

Medical Science & Technology (MedST)

Molecular Science & Engineering (MSE)

Mobility & Transport Engineering (MTE)

Production Engineering (ProdE)

The Profile Areas pool scientific expertise in the University’s key research areas. The success of the Profile Areas relies on excellent fundamental research conducted at the level of the individual disciplines.
