Plastic in the environment is a topic of emerging concern. In the iMulch project, the effects of agricultural mulch films on a terrestrial ecosystem are investigated. At the institute of Applied Microbiology, the focus is on the biodegradation of plastic mulches. The biodegradability of so-called biodegradable mulches is tested under different conditions and key degrading microbes are isolated and characterized. Further, biodegradability and possible upcycling strategies for conventional mulch films are investigated.

Task

Isolation and cultivation of potential degrading microbes from soil samples with selective media, quantification of monomer degradation capabilities via growth curves and monomer dissipation with HPLC / GC-MS depending on progress: growth and degradation under varying conditions
