MoveOn
A computational study will be performed to enhance our understanding of the interaction between red blood cells and blood plasma in wider arteties. We are in the process of extending our exisiting computational tools based on the lattice-Boltzmann method to allow for simulations of dense suspensions of red blood cells fully resolving their ovular shape, and fully resolving the flow of interstitial liquid (i.e. plasma). The results of the simulations will provide detailed insight in the motion of, and flow-induced stresses on red blood cells; stress on vessel walls; and mass transfer and mixing in (wider) arteries.
Task
The student will conduct and interpret simulations at a range of flow conditions in terms of solids volume fractions, Reynolds numbers, and arterial geometries. An important aspect of the research will be to visualize the dynamic simulations.
Requirements
Background in fluid mechanics & computational methods. Some programming experience (in Fortran and/or C(++)), and working in a linux environment is desirable.
