MoveOn
Data centers can consume up to 100 times more energy than a standard office building. We are working with several large datacenter facilities in the U.S., evaluating the different options for energy management. The research project has two components. First, we will study what are the most effective strategies for improving the energy efficiency of legacy datacenters, constrained by existing configurations. Second, we will study the designs of new datacenters, incorporating renewable and energy efficiency measures.
Task
The perspective student(s) will conduct energy simulations of different configurations for HVAC systems, and work with datacenter managers and vendors to acquire specifications of the systems for energy modeling purposes. The student(s) will also have opportunities for site visits of datacenter facilities.
Requirements
Solid understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid dynamics. Prior knowledge of building systems and energy modeling (e.g., TRNSYS) are pluses.
