High-temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells were operated under electrical load (in-situ) in the BESSY synchrotron of the Helmholtz center in Berlin, Germany. The synchrotron x-ray radiographs were analyzed and the morphology of cracks in the catalyst layers of the membrane electrode assembly was investigated . The investigations of the cracks are based on black/white images which were created from the grey level radiographs.
The student will convert grey level x-ray radiographs to black/white which are of worse quality than those reported in . Images which were successfully converted will be investigated with stochastic methods. D. Froning, W. Maier, J. Groß, T. Arlt, I. Manke, W. Lehnert, Int. J. Hydrogen Energy 2014, 39, 9447-9456.
