High-temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells were operated under electrical load (in-situ) in the BESSY synchrotron of the Helmholtz center in Berlin, Germany. The synchrotron x-ray radiographs were analyzed and the morphology of cracks in the catalyst layers of the membrane electrode assembly was investigated [1]. The investigations of the cracks are based on black/white images which were created from the grey level radiographs.

Task

The student will convert grey level x-ray radiographs to black/white which are of worse quality than those reported in [1]. Requirements

Excellent knowledge of image processing techniques – background and practical experience.
