MoveOn

The application of biophotonics for medical research holds great promise to improve treatments and prevention of diseases. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of disabilities and death worldwide. Since the pathogenetic mechanism is widely under-investigated, novel methods are explored at the Laserbased Diagnostics Laboratory to investigate the changes in the brain as a result of TBI.

Task

The intern will develop a method to simulate a traumatic head accident on dead brain tissue slices with the use of a high-intensity laser beam and a high-speed camera. In the proposed research, sample liquids will be systematically examined with a goal of understanding the fundamentals of laser-induced bubble formation and time-resolved microscopic imaging. All required laser systems and optical resources are available. The goal of this project is to help visualize the pathological damages of the exposed brain tissue by producing a reliable method to generate shock waves. The gained knowledge of the pathogenetic mechanism may help to find a proper treatment for TBI patients to prevent long-term disabilities.

Requirements

Minimum of two years experience of studies in electrical engineering, physics or similar
