The educational world has been profoundly modified due to the emergence and introduction of interactive teaching styles shaped by gamification and mixed reality elements. Previous studies have shown that students can control their learning processes in mixed reality systems more actively and that gamification elements in lectures can lead to a long-term increase in the learners’ motivation. Mixed-Reality and Gamification have proven to be powerful tools to visualize contents in a credible, in the long-run cost-efficient and safe way. They predominantly aim at generating a meaningful, salutary user experience. Many lecturers, however, lack knowledge on how to implement gamification and/or mixed reality elements into their lectures. Therefore, the Cybernetics Lab IMA & IfU has designed a Mixed Reality and Gamification workshop regarding different disciplines, scenarios, budget as well as possible learning implications. This workshop aims at helping lecturers who teach e.g. humanities/social or engineering sciences to develop and implement the elements of these educational applications into their courses, in accordance with their institutional/monetary circumstances.
The UROP student will get the chance to undertake his/her own research project in an interdisciplinary research team. It will be the student’s task to develop and implement an exemplary virtual learning environment for lecturers of humanities/social sciences based on previously accomplished research portraying the state of the art. The virtual learning environment can be realized with the help of a kit-system such as Minecraft or other tools like Unity 3D or Unreal Engine.
First game design experiences, basic programming knowledge, basic insights into user experience principles, creative ideas on the virtual refurbishment of learning contents, interest in the subject in general, optional: first experiences with a kit-system for virtual learning environments such as Minecraft Edu, Secondlife, Habbo, Secret City etc.
