At the core of UROP International’s three program components is an individual research project at one of RWTH Aachen University’s research institutes or labs: You will have the unique opportunity to conduct your very own research project and experience first-hand what research entails at an early stage of your academic career. As a UROP project is usually integrated into a large-scale research project, you will become part of an established research team and will be mentored and supervised by a member of the excellent research staff of your host institute.
German Language and Intercultural Training
While all communication in the program takes place in English, our UROP International intensive German course will help you navigate your new environs with greater ease and gain a better understanding of German culture. The German language course takes place twice a week throughout the program. To better prepare you for your stay and raise your awareness of intercultural differences, you will also participate in an intercultural training in the very first week of your stay in Aachen.
Cultural Program & Immersion
The third component of UROP International centers around extracurricular activities, allowing you to experience German culture, society and history up close and in person. These activities include field trips to some of the must-see sights in the region and offer an eclectic program: City trips to Cologne, Maastricht, Bonn or Düsseldorf, cultural excursions to museums, castles or cultural heritages sites as well as nature and outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing and kayaking.
You will also have plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the local student scene and to meet lots of local students hailing both from Germany as well as from all over the globe. Each UROP participant will be accompanied by a local buddy providing support and advice throughout the program.
Academic Recognition
UROP International is credit-bearing and you may be able to transfer these credits to your home university in the US or Canada. Please make sure to discuss this option with your home university prior to the beginning of the program.
All UROP International participants are expected to submit a final research report towards the end of the program and participate in the final UROP Symposium, which traditionally marks the grand finale of each year’s UROP International. Upon successful completion of the program, you will receive a certificate for both the research project and the German language class.
Going overseas for an entire summer to see Europe while building a really strong resume point by doing international research is the best thing that I ever could have hoped to do in one summer.
