University of Shanghai for Science and Technology was founded 105 years ago. The university is distributed among six locations within the city of Shanghai. The current university resulted in 1996 from a fusion of the Technical Universities of East China and Shanghai Insitute of Mechanical Engineering, the former Shanghai Industry School. Up until 1998 it was under the direction of the Ministry of Mechanical Engineering. Today focus is clearly placed on the technical disciplines, however teaching has strengthened in subjects such as management, natural sciences, and medicine. The university has 15 colleges, two departments, 30 research institutes, 12 research centers, and three research academy institutes. The university has ten partnerships with universities abroad, including MIT and HAW Hamburg.
