Profile

USM was founded in Valparaíso on April 27, 1926, when the Federico Santa María Foundation was established, thanks to his will and testament. The entrepreneur and businessman from Valparaíso wanted to leave his country with a center of scientific and technological studies, to train professionals at the highest level.

Since its founding in 1926, Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, USM for short, has been dedicated to teaching and research at the highest level in science, technology, and engineering. Out of the more than 55 universities in Chile, USM is consistently ranked among the most prestigious institutions of higher education. In 2012, as in past years, USM was ranked as the third most prestigious university in Chile. As one of Chile’s oldest universities, USM is a traditional private university, belonging to the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities and the Cruz del Sur University Network of research-intensive Chilean universities.

The university is quickly growing, with five campuses and over 18000 students enrolled in the 49 undergraduate, 16 Masters, and five doctoral programs. In addition, USM is accredited for five years by Chile’s National Accreditation Commission. The mission of the university, in keeping with the founder’s wishes, is to have both a national and international presence, and promote comprehensive education and academic excellence above all.

A university partnership has existed wtih UTFSM since October 2005.
