USM was founded in Valparaíso on April 27, 1926, when the Federico Santa María Foundation was established, thanks to his will and testament. The entrepreneur and businessman from Valparaíso wanted to leave his country with a center of scientific and technological studies, to train professionals at the highest level.

Since its founding in 1926, USM has been dedicated to teaching and research at the highest level in science, technology, and engineering. USM is consistently ranked among the most prestigious institutions of higher education. As one of Chile’s oldest universities, USM is a traditional private university, belonging to the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities and the Cruz del Sur University Network of research-intensive Chilean universities.

The mission of the university, in keeping with the founder’s wishes, is to have both a national and international presence, and promote comprehensive education and academic excellence above all. The university partnership with USM exists since October 2005.
