Talk Lehre - Student Numbers at Record High and New Initiatives to Secure High-Quality Teaching

On June 24, 2015, on its fifth anniversary, Talk Lehre ("Teaching Talk") centered around current topics in the areas of quality improvement and digitalization in teaching and learning. With more than 200 participants, Talk Lehre has established itself as a platform for the exchange of experience and good practice in teaching and learning.

The event was opened by RWTH Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg, who emphasized the centrality of teaching and learning at RWTH Aachen, and the Vice-Rector for Teaching, Professor Aloys Krieg, who gave an overview of the challenges for teaching and learning posed by the strong increase in student numbers over the past few years.

In order to address these challenges, RWTH is establishing a quality mangement system for teaching that is based on University-wide quality targets and involves all groups at the University. Several initiatives are underway in the "A Good Academic Start in Engineering" project, which is conducted in collaboration with FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences, as well as in projects concerned with teacher training and with the evaluation of digitalization concepts. All these projects, which received several awards over the last months, were presented at the Talk Lehre event.

Furthermore, a poster presentation with 24 exhibits on the topic of teaching at RWTH invited the attendants to learn about and discuss new concepts.

Media-Based Teaching

Shifting the focus on innovative technology-enhanced learning methods, eLearning coordinator Dr. Marcus Gerards presented the services and opportunities of the new "Media in Teaching in Learning" support unit, which assists RWTH lecturers with implementing media-based teaching formats.

Recognition for RWTH Instructors

At the close of the event, eight RWTH instructors obtained the title of RWTH Lecturer, which is to honor distinguished researchers with outstanding achievements in teaching.
