Details about the "Incentives for Good Teaching" Survey

 

Survey Goals

All relevant groups of RWTH Aachen will be randomly asked in survey about the use and costs of possible incentives, in order to evaluate which incentives, from the perspective of members of RWTH Aachen are well suited to improving the quality of teaching. Using the results, a work group will develop a strategy recommendation for implementing such incentives and will submit it to the faculties via the Rectorate and deans of studies for consultation.

 

Survey Design

  • Online survey
  • Survey period: July 11 to 24, 2011
  • Survey duration: about 15 to 20 minutes
  • Participation is voluntary and anonymous.
  • Call for participation: randomly sent emails with a link to the survey
  • Target group: RWTH Aachen teachers, that is professors, academic staff, and representatives from the student body
 

Data Protection

The survey design and questionnaire are created in collaboration with the Data Protection Officer and the Staff Council of Academic, Medical, and Artistic Staff at RWTH Aachen.

  • Assurance of Anonymity: Participation in the survey in anonymous and does not include providing any personal information. The answer data is saved in an anonymous format on a RWTH Aachen Computing and Communication Center server.
  • It is not possible to draw conclusions about a person based on the answer data. Furthermore, a minimum number of eight participants has been set.
  • Server security: The survey is technically conducted using the EvaSys system. The student course evaluations already take place at the university through EvaSys. Data is saved on a RWTH Aachen Computing and Communication Center server.
 

Survey Time Line

  • Winter Semester 2010/11: Development of questionnaire including determination of incentives to be evaluated
  • June 21, 2011: Agreement with the Data Protection Officer
  • June 22, 2011: Session of the Staff Council of Academic, Medical, and Artistic Staff
  • July 8 - 24, 2011: Survey period
  • July 27 to August 31, 2011: Data evaluation
  • Starting September 1, 2011: Reporting of responses
  • Winter Semester 2011/12: Start of implementation in the subjects
 

Use of Results

In order to be able evaluate the incentives regarding their practicability in each RWTH Aachen faculty, data evaluation takes place according to group and faculty membership as well as age.

The survey results enable the formulation of a target group specific recommendation for action for the university. The work group Incentives will present the survey results to the Rectorate, Deans of Studies, the Rectorate Committee for Quality Management in Teaching, in order to determine further action within the faculties.

Publication of results: RWTH Aachen is increasingly finding itself in a competition within teaching and learning. For this reason, the results will not be published. However they can be requested by members of the groups named above through .

In order to ensure the results are representative, a sample size of 30 percent (minimum) to 50 (maximum) has been set.

For data protection reasons, a minimum of eight participants must participate.
