After a successful initial round RWTH Aachen will be able to continue the projects started in the second phase of funding thanks to renewed success in the federal program for teaching quality. Both the University's proposal and the joint proposal from RWTH Aachen, Ruhr University Bochum, and TU Dortmund University were successful. This serves as a confirmation from the federal government and states for the University's teaching strategy and implementation of its measures as part of the Teaching Quality Pact.
On May 23, 2016, State Secretary Thomas Rachel presented the funding certificates from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Approximately 38 million Euros, which be roughly evenly divided between the two funding periods, will be provided to RWTH Aachen between October 1, 2011 and December 31, 2020 to implement its measures for improving teaching and study conditions. Over the next four years, the “RWTH 2020 Excellent Teaching” program will receive 16.3 million Euros in funding to further improve supervision and guidance of students and offer more targeted, individualized advising services. The Institute of Information Management in Mechanical Engineering – IMA – and the Center for Learning and Knowledge Management – ZLW – will receive 3.4 million Euros for their participation in the “Excellent Teaching and Learning in the Engineering Sciences” project, ELLI for short.
To achieve its goals RWTH wishes to use the funding to strengthen measures for prospective students – additional pupils' labs, self-assessments in all fields of study – and intensify its mentoring offers. In order to optimize continuing education and suitable and targeted offers, research and network factors will be joined together wtih qualification at the Center for Excellence in Academic Teaching and Learning. Findings from the Exploratory Teaching Space showed there is a strong demand for high-quality blended learning content. As a result, a new service unit for modern, media-supported teaching formats has been established.
ELLI seeks to address the most pressing demands placed on engineering education in the upcoming years, including Industry 4.0 requirements, entrepreneurial thinking and practice, and the use of augmented and virtual teaching worlds.
