Through our Research Alumni Project, we now have a blog online. The blog, in German and Engilsh, is targeted towards alumni, scientists, and friengs of RWTH Aachen worldwide. It is also a platform where our research alumni can introduce themselves and talk with each other. We look forward to your comments and guest entries!
Astronomy in Ancient India
As part of the Research Alumni Project, RWTH visiting researcher from India, Prof. Dr. Amithaba Ghosh is holding a talk in about astronomy in ancient India on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at 6pm. In his presentation, which will be held in English, "Astronomical Dating of Ancient Events: Glimpses of Ancient Indian Astronomy" he will discuss the basics of classical astronomy in India and illustrate what role they play in dating events in antiquity. The talk will take place at the RWTH Humboldt Haus, Pontstraße 41. Entrance is free of charge; please register via email.
Invitation: IDEA League Network and Alumni Meeting in Paris
The alumni organizations of the universities in the IDEA League, which includes RWTH Aachen, TU Delft, ParisTech, and ETH Zürich, are holding a joing network get together in Paris on March 21, 2013. RWTH Aachen alumni in and around Paris are invited to attend the reception! The meeting, at the Maison des Polytechniciens, 17 Rue de Poitiers, 75007 Paris, begins at 6:30pm and is free of charge. Successful Professionally and in a Master's Course
24 graduates recently celebrated completing their extra-occupational Master's program in Energy Management, at Haus der Technik in Essen, an external institute of RWTH Aachen. "Congratulations, not only for finishing your exams, but also for choosing this subject." Professor Alber Moser from the RWTH Aachen Institute of Power Systems and Power Economics, IAEW for short, indicated the particular relevance and importance of energy management, which offers graduates the best career prospects, but also will present many challenges in the coming year in light of the many energy transitions. Professor Moser and Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Ströbele from the Chair of Economics, Economic Theory, and Energy Management at the University of Münster are responsible for the academic administration of the Master's course.
RWTH Alumnae Eligible for Programs of Santander Universities Network
Banco Santander has created different programs in partnership with UCLA Anderson Executive Education to equip our next generation of global women leaders. Santander's purpose in launching these programs is to strengthen its relationship with the Santander Universities Network, and to establish Santander as an advocate of higher education providing women with career development and psychosocial support. Participants selected from the Santander Universities Network will be provided with developmental tools, training and knowledge to improve productivity, and the skills to retain talent and ensure the future success of organizations.
Participation costs for the selected candidates will be covered by Santander; travel costs are however not included.

Thomas Gries Receives Honorary Professorship from Moscow State University
During a celebratory ceremony on January 25 in Moscow, Prof. Dr. Thomas Gries, Director of the RWTH Aachen Univeristy Insitute of Textile Technology, ITA, received an honorary professorship from Lomonosov Moscow State University, MSU. "Prof. Gries is being honored for his achivements in the development of fiber based composite materials," said Prof. Sadownitschij, Rector of MSU, to the numerous high-ranking guests from politics, business, and research. The honorary professorship is awarded annually to a foreign scientist and a Russian citizen. You can read more in the RWTH Aachen press release.
Mathematician of the Month
RWTH Aachen Professor Johanna Heitzer was named Mathematician of the Month by the German Mathematical Society. The society, which connects 5000 mathematicians, awards this distinction who inspre through their involvement in mathematics. Since September 2011, Heitzer has been in charge of Didactics in Mathematics at RWTH Aachen. You can found out more in the RWTH Aachen press release.
A Voice at the German Diversity Prize 2013
RWTH Aachen could celebrate its distinction as "Most Diverse Employer" at the first German Diversity Prize in 2011. An alumna and professor of RWTH Aachen will decide who is among the 2013 award winners. Professor Carmen Leicht-Scholten is a member of this year's jury along with Dr. Kristina Schröder, Prof. Dr. Rita Süssmuth, Frank Mattern from McKinsey, and Roland Tichy from WirtschaftsWoche. RWTH Aachen On Board EU Flagship
The "Human Brain Project",HBP for short, and the "Graphene Flagship Project" were selected as visionary research initiatives of the European Union. The projects are expected to markedly contribute to technological advancement and promote scientific excellence and new collaborations in research and development. Both projects will receive funding of up to 100 million Euros a year over the next ten years through the FET Flagship Program. RWTH Aachen is project partner of both initiatives. Talented RWTH Researchers on Mount Everest
In the project Aachen Dental and Medical Expedition, ADEMED for short, doctoral candidates learn how field research in remote areas is organized and carried out. The project, initiated by Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Küpper from the RWTH Aachen Institute Occupational Medicine, provides doctoral candidates with the opportunity to research preventative health measures for participants in trekking trips, for example in high-altitude areas, and to collect data on site.
