Dr. Christina Büsing Receives Freigeist Fellowship from Volkswagen Foundation

Mathematician Dr. Christina Büsing from RWTH Aachen will funded with the Freigeist Fellowship from the Volkswagen Foundation. She won over the international review committee with her project "Robust Planning in Medical Care for a Stable Health System." The foundation is supporting the research project with 864,000 Euros. The project deals with the organizational process improvement of two core problems in our health system: medical care in rural areas and the efficient management of hospitals and similar specialized institutions.

Construction of a Unique Large-Scale Battery System Has Started

The official start of construction of the large-scale battery storage M5BAT in Aachen recently took place. It has great potential to become a central component in the turn to sustainable energies due to its ability to stabilize grid operation. Large battery storage systems are particularly interesting as they are highly flexible in their application. The system, the Modular Multimegatt, Multitechnology Medium-Voltage Battery Storage System, is unique in its modular design and planned power class of 5 megawatts, combining different battery technologies for optimal use.

Drinking Lizards Lead to Targeted Transport of Lubricants

The Bionics Working Group at the RWTH Aachen Institute of Biology II is researching the surface structure of Texas horned lizards. The Texas horned lizard has a special ability: To quench its thirst, it doesn't need to look for water sources, but rather can collect liquid on its skin. It collects small amounts of water from the environment, such as moist sand, using capillary channels between its scales. Small capillary channels then transport the water towards the lizard's snout. The Bionics Working Group at the RWTH Aachen Institute of Biology II investigated the geometry of these channels on the skin of moisture-harvesting lizards and successfully transferred it to plastic and metal surfaces.

Observation of Spectacular High-Energy Cosmic Neutrino

Physicists from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory presented the observation of a neutrino with unprecedented high energy at the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference in The Hague, Netherlands, on August 4, 2015. The collaboration had already published the results of a measurement in the professional journal Science in November 2013. The results were proof of non-terrestrial neutrinos. The RWTH Aachen IceCube Group also focuses on data analysis and detector development.

Production of High-Quality Synthetic Graphene for Industrial Applications Within Reach

Graphene onsists of a single layer of carbon atoms, is highly flexible and mechanically extremely stable. An optically transparent material, it conducts electricity better than any other material. The combination of these properties is unique, and it is expected that the use of the “wonder material” graphene will lead to technological breakthroughs – in touch screen technology or in flexible optoelectronics, for example. So far, the production of graphene was problematic: in 2004, in an unconventional experiment, the British-Russian scientists Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov used adhesive tape in order to separate a single layer of graphene from a piece of natural graphite. This sticky tape method, however, is not suitable for mass production. Now, two early-career researchers, Luca Banszerus and Michael Schmitz, as well as other researchers from RWTH Aachen and Forschungszentrum Jülich, achieved a decisive breakthrough. Production of the material is based on chemical vapor deposition or CVD.

RWTH Comes Out on Top for Equal Opportunities

RWTH Aachen is among the most successful universities in Germany when it comes to equal opportunities for women and men. This was certified by the Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences' current university ranking of equal opportunities aspects. Earning ten of twelve possible points, RWTH, together with FU Berlin and the University of Hildesheim, topped the ranking, which evaluated 65 universities.

Aachen Team Wins Robitics World Competition: Interview with Professor Sabina Jeschke

The Carologistics team won its second championship title in the Logistics League. The finals of the RoboCup robotics competition took place in Hefei, China. In a suspenseful final, the Aachen robots won against those of the Switzerland-based Solidus team. After an initial head-to-head competition, the Aachen team profited from the robustness of its system and was finally able to win the championship title in the RoboCup Logistics League with a score of 46:16. The agent-based high-level organization of the robot team, in combination with its basic capabilities of localization, navigation, and ambient perception, built the basis for a stable interaction between the machines and their adequate adaptation to changing environmental parameters.
