Nobel Prize in Physics for Measurements on Neutrinos

This year, the Noble Prize in physics was awarded to the particle physicists Takaaki Kajita (56) from Japan and Arthur McDonald (72) from Canada for proving that neutrinos have mass. Neutrinos are subatomic particles that have the ability to pass through matter with negligible interaction. Only vast detectors are able to measure neutrinos. Aachen researchers headed by Dr. Stefan Roth from the Chair of Experimental Physics IIIB contribute to the development of new technologies for particle measurements using the ND280 near detector.

How Intelligent Systems Are Changing the Workplace

Intelligent systems and increasing automation are leading to changes for employees in many fields within the textile industry. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research, BMBF for short, is supporting the formation of a RWTH working group, which is investigating the interaction between social and technical innovations. The project is under the direction of Dr. Yves-Simon Gloy from the Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) and will receive 2.5 million Euros over five years.

Hybrid Day 2015

At the beginning of October over 70 experts attended the ten-year anniversary of the Aachen professional congress Hybrid Day, which takes place every two years. Participants discussed current developments and trends in the field of alternative engines at the RWTH Aachen Institute of Automotive Engineering or ika. A central discussion point was the challenges of electromobility, particularly the continued development of battery and motor technology. A decisive factor for high market penetration is the reduction of the cost of materials and the automization of production processes.

Electromobility Lab Supports Automobile Supply Industry

The Electromobility Lab (eLab) on Campus Melaten has been completed after nine months of construction. 3,600 square meters offer space for offices, a hall for a battery abuse center or BAC, and a machine park. Over 60 experts from science and industry will work in the electromobility lab. "Scientists and industry partners are researching the entire process chain in the eLab from technology development to testing to prototype production and develop these further," said Professor Achim Kampker, head of the Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components, PEM of RWTH at the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering at RWTH Aachen and head of the Center for Electromobility Production.
