Burn Rubber! RWTH Alumni Visit ContiTech AG in Hamburg Harburg

This year's RWTH alumni get together in the north was held on April 21 in Hamburg-Harburg. The program included a tour of ContiTech AG, organized by alumnus Winfried Sturm. Alumnus Andreas Köhler and his colleagues warmly welcomed our 16-person group and talked about the entire company in great detail. The tour took us through the company's spaces, including the technical center The technical center is the core of the development department – here all of the prototypes for hose systems are made, tested, and optimized by hand. Out of more than 2000 products particular focus is placed on cable and wiring connections in automotive engineering. Every medium, whether gas, oil, water, air, urea, etc. necessitates different requirements and thus individual product properties. Our alumnus, Dr. Maximillian Schöngart, briefed the former Öchers about current developments at RWTH, as they only recently moved from the IKV to ContiTech AG. Traditionally the RWTH alumni get together ends with a meal at a restaurant. The group chatted over pizza and pasta, sharing memories of Aachen and ideas for the next get together in Hamburg.

Many thanks to Mr. Sturm and Mr. Köhler and his colleagues, who made the topic understandable and interesting for our lay participants.

Munich's RWTH Alumni are Pesuaded by "Tested Safety" at TÜV SÜD

Following their social in March, Munich's RWTH alumni recently visited another renowned company, namely TÜV SÜD in Garching. Professor Axel Stepken, TÜV- SÜD AG Chief Executive and RWTH graduate in electrical engineering was proud to personally greet the alumni and present his company to them.

The subsequent visits to TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH and TÜV SÜD Battery Testing GmbH offered the alumni glimpses into diverse the diverse activities and testing responsibility of TÜV. The social gathering at the “Neuwirth” in Garching at the conclusion of the event was another perfect opportunity for the alumni to chat with one another or have a conversation with Professor Axel Stepken. We are very grateful to him for his dedication and his presence, which made the visit to TÜV SÜD a special event for Munich's alumni group.

First Alumni Social in Karlsruhe

Let's see if we can't meet up with a couple of RWTH alumni in Karlsruhe. That was the alumni team's motto on the occasion of this year's annual conference of the “alumni-clubs.net” parent organization in the Baden metropolis for inviting former graduates living there to attend a first meet-up.

On the eve of the conference, Dietrich Hunold from the alumni team was able to personally welcome 12 alumni at the “Carls Wirtshaus.” The RWTH alumni now living in Karlsruhe showed great interest in what has been happening at their alma mater. What is going on now with the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering, the WZL, after one of the machine halls was destroyed in a fire last year? How is the Campus Melaten coming along? Is the new lecture hall complex in operation? Two younger graduates still fondly remembered the Graduation Celebration at the Aachen Dressage Stadium with its great atmosphere. Needless to say, there was a lot to talk about. At the end, every one was on the same page that this meet-up should not just be a one-time event. Thus, a second meeting of RWTH alumni is already being planned for the coming fall.

Designetz – What are the Tools Needed for Energy Transition?

Designetz is the name of the project slated to run for four years, which is sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy within the framework of the SINTEG program, the so-called “Schaufenster intelligente Energie” - digital agenda for energy transition. In total, funds of 30 million euros are being made available for “Designetz.” 46 partners in research and development, energy economy, and industry want to develop an efficient, secure, and flexible overall system from various individual solutions for power production and supply. The Institute of Power Systems and Power Economics, IAEW, at RWTH, where Professor Dr.-Ing. Albert Moser is chair, will assume the direction of the scientific component of the work package. Their aim is to model and simulate the energy system of 2035.

When the Fan Breaks, Helps Comes via Smart Glasses

First the challenge was for the team to build the tallest free-standing tower out of 20 spaghetti noodles, a meter of tape, and a meter of string with a marshmallow as the top of the tower in 20 minutes. A targeted way to promote agility: try out ideas, and if successful, cultivate them. If not, toss them and try out the next idea. Then the 2ndTechathon at RWTH Aachen in collaboration with the BMW Group was three days long and focused on digitilization in production. Within the framework of the partnership between RWTH and the BMW Group, which began at the beginning of the year, 20 RWTH students, with the motto "data4us", developed strategies to solve problems that occur during production - or, even better, predict them so they don't even arise.

RWTH Receives 8.8 Million Euros for Two New Research Training Groups

The University will establish the research training groups "UnRAVeL – Uncertainty and Randomness in Algorithms, Verification, and Logic" and "Energy, Entropy, and Dissipative Dynamics" in October 2017. The purpose of a Research Training Group is to promote particularly qualified doctoral candidates in their research. RWTH will receive a total of 8.8 million euros in the next four and a half years.

Iranian Delegation Visited RWTH

There's a definite spirit of academic optimism in Iran as of late – Internationalisation is a core topic and Germany a welcome partner. According to the Iranian Deputy Minister for higher education policy, Professor Hossein Salar Amoli, Germany is even considered their number one choice as strategic partner. This is also the reason for his visit to RWTH Aachen University together with a delegation of sixteen representatives from Iran's leading Universities. Travel arrangements were made by the German Academic Exchange Service, DAAD for short.
