Dates and Deadlines

The goal of this program offered by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen is to provide a broad education to future mechanical engineers so they can go on to find employment in all technical areas of industry, not only in research and development, but also in production and sales.

The Master’s programs are academic, research-based programs that are geared to research and methods. The programs allow graduates to pursue successful careers that span their entire working life because the programs not only teach current contents, but also theoretically substantiated basic concepts and methods that transcend current trends.

The manufacturing of components is mostly generic and similarly the design of technical systems be taught mostly generically because of the generally applicable basic rules and principles. Knowledge and understanding of these correlations irrespective of the product usually lead to more rational processing of design tasks and to higher quality solutions.

The Master’s program in development and design engineering teaches the methodical approach and engineering science fundamentals, which directly assist every product engineer in the planning and realization of products – be it in innovation management, brainstorming, the conception of complex technical plants or in advancing tried and tested constructions. So the program is very broad not only with regard to content, but also with regard to the mentioned branches; graduates will be able to apply the acquired systematic expertise and abilities without any restrictions and in goal-oriented manner in plant engineering, vehicle engineering or in consumer goods. Given the wide range of electives, a coordinated branch-specific concentration can be established in addition to the cross-sector concept of the mandatory fields.

Degree Content

The three semester long course of study is broken down into two pieces. During the two semester examination period, students should complete all mandatory and elective modules. In the final and third semester, students independently work on a defined research topic and finish their Master thesis.

An outline of the degree content is given in the curriculum, which you can find on the faculty overview page of courses of study.

A prerequisite for starting studies in a first university degree, with which the necessary background education can be proven, as determined in the exam regulations. The exam board determines whether it fulfills the entrance requirements. On the faculty website you can find detailed information on how to apply.

Career Prospects

After successfully completing the Master's program, it is possible for students to apply for doctoral studies at one of the chairs in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. A profession in any technical field and almost any branch and sector of industry both domestically and abroad is possible. Futhermore, graduates are able to successfully work in integrative and interdisciplinary topic areas.

Examination Regulations

Regulations that apply for all Bachelor and Master courses of study as well as detailed information about the necessary documentation of required language skills can be found in RWTH’s Comprehensive Examination Regulation. Examination regulations are only published in German as they are legally binding.

Subject Specific Exam Regulations regulate academic goals, the course of study layout, and exam procedures. The appendix to the regulations contains the description of the modules, from which the course of study is composed.
