Questions and Answers Regarding the Education Fund

General Information About the Scholarship Program

Who can apply?

Eligible to apply are students already enrolled at RWTH Aachen University as well as new first-year students. The application phase runs from June 1 to 30 of each year.

During that time, you will find the corresponding link to the online application form here.

How are my chances of getting the scholarship?

We cannot make a blanket statement about an application’s chance of success. Whether you receive the scholarship depends on many factors, such as the number of scholarship funds available for the upcoming funding period and the number and quality of applications received. Thus, you may meet the requirements for a scholarship but still not get it.

We, therefore, urge you not to rely on receiving a scholarship, even if you have outstanding grades. At the same time, however, we would like to encourage you to try and apply in any case.

Can I apply if I am an international student?

Yes, if you are enrolled at RWTH Aachen University or are currently applying for admission as a regular full-time student at RWTH, you are eligible to apply for a scholarship.

I am enrolled in a graduate or a second degree program (Aufbaustudium/Zweitstudium). Can I apply?

Yes, a second degree or supplementary degree, a Master's degree or a part-time or dual study program are also eligible.

I will exceed the prescribed period of study during the funding period. Is this relevant?

Yes, this is relevant. In order to be eligible, you must be on track to complete your studies within the normal length of the program during the entire funding period, that is during winter and summer semester. This takes into account the increase in students’ individual prescribed program lengths due to Covid-19 (one additional semester each for winter semester 2021/2022, summer semester 2021, winter semester 2020/21 and summer semester 2020) - find more information on our Corona News Blog.

The maximum funding period can only be extended by one semester, and only upon request, in cases where there are valid reasons for exceeding the standard period of study.

Requests must be submitted before the application period ends. We will only consider requests that we have received by June 30 of each year. Please use the following form when submitting your request.

I am planning a leave of absence for the duration of one semester during the scholarship period. Can I apply?

There is generally no provision for support during a leave of absence during the funding period. Only in well-founded exceptional cases may applications be made for funding during leaves of absence in a semester. These include instances of students wishing to complete subject-related stays abroad or internships (at home and abroad) that serve the study objective.

Subject area-related stays abroad include internships that serve the study objective, a course of study at a foreign university or language school, or a stay abroad as part of an exchange program of at least four months each. At least 50 percent of the study abroad period must fall within the semester of leave.

Yes. Please send us your certificate as soon as you have received it.

I have not yet received my Bachelor’s degree certificate. Can I still apply?

No, you simply enter your international grade according to the grading system of the country in which you received it. The conversion to the German grading system is then carried out by the Education Fund team.

What is the difference between university semesters and (subject) semesters?

University semesters cover all semesters spent at an educational institution (university of applied sciences and university). Subject-related semesters only include the time spent on the course of study currently being pursued. Semesters at other universities (e.g. from discontinued courses of study) or other fields of study are not taken into account when specifying the semesters of study.

The pdf document won't upload. What do I do?

This may be due to a poor conversion of the documents. In this case, we ask you to please re-convert your application, for example using the PDF-Blender program to pdf form and re-upload them in a single pdf.

If you still have difficulties uploading the document, try with a different browser or computer.

I forgot something while filling out my application or want to modify my application. What do I do?

Please complete the form once again as if you've never applied for this funding period. In this case, don't use the log in information you already received. We will only take the most recent of your applications into consideration.

The form started to load very slowly or not at all as I entered my responses in the free text field. What's the problem?

This can happen if you copy and paste your answers from an external document. Make sure that you are not accidentally copying any invisible special characters or symbols in the format. In the past, problems like this have occured, for example, when applicants used "Pages" on Apple devices.

How do I know whether I successfully submitted my application with all the attachments?

Once we have received your application, we will send a confirmation email, including your application number and a short summary of your entries in the free-text fields. Please keep this email until the scholarship selection process is complete. Please note that the application number is necessary for future reference.

If you have not received this confirmation email, please contact us immediately so we can check whether the application was received.
