Experts Meet to Discuss Heavy Rainfall and Flash Floods

50th International Symposium on Hydraulic Engineering Aachen

 

Over the past two decades, an area that what was once focused purely on flood protection has developed into flood risk management. Previously, river flooding was the key point of focus. Although there is still a great need for action in this area, the focus is now increasingly shifting towards the phenomenon of heavy rain and flash floods. These are particularly problematic in that they affect all areas – essentially, everywhere is at risk. Even small thunderstorm cells can lead to severe local flooding and cause great damage. Concepts from traditional flood protection cannot be directly transferred to protection against heavy rainfall, while climate models also point to a stronger trend in the occurrence of extreme weather.

The 50th International Symposium on Hydraulic Engineering Aachen, IWASA for short, will delve into the topic of heavy rainfall and flash floods on January 9 and 10, 2020. The event will take place at the Technology Centre Aachen, Dennewartstraße 25-27. The symposium presents a popular opportunity for experts to interact with each other and share their ideas. It is primarily aimed at engineers and natural scientists from the fields of hydraulic engineering and water management, but is open to anyone who is interested in the topic. This highly relevant and current topic is expected to attract around 500 participants from Germany and abroad.

The symposium is supported by the Ministry for Environment, Agriculture, Conservation and Consumer Protection of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, proRWTH, and the Friends of the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management, IWW for short. Participation is free of charge and registration is not required.
