RWTH Scores Well in International Ranking of Universities

07/06/2018

RWTH has once again achieved strong results in the “U-Multirank” university ranking, improving its ratings in several areas compared to last year’s edition of the ranking.

Initiated and funded by the European Commission, the ranking compares 1,600 universities from more than 90 countries. Unlike traditional rankings lists, it follows a multidimensional approach: each measure is graded and receives a score between weak (5) and very good (1), which makes it possible for students to compare the strengths and weaknesses of different institutions.

A total of 27 indicators were assessed in the ranking; on 19 indicators, RWTH received grades of “very good” or “good.” As in previous years, the University is particularly strong in the areas of research and knowledge transfer. For almost all of the assessed indicators, RWTH achieved higher scores than in 2017; most indicators, such as external funding, publications, citations, patents, and collaboration with industry received the highest grade.

The University also scores well on international orientation, that is, on criteria such as proportion of international students and staff, student mobility, and English-language Master’s programs.

This year, in addition, the following disciplines were comparatively assessed: Medicine, dentistry, and psychology. The respective RWTH degree programs received very high ratings. The Medicine degree program was rated particularly highly by the students, who provided information by responding to U-Multirank’s online survey: the program was rated to be “good” or “very good” on each of the indicators assessed by the survey. The students were especially satisfied with organizational aspects as well as the integration or pre-clinical and clinical content.

RWTH has achieved top grades as well in areas such as external funding and joint publications with industry, a result that highlights the University’s close ties with industry and the professional and practical relevance of its teaching and research. This is reflected in the strong results achieved in the fields of psychology and dentistry, which score particularly well on external funding and publications.
