A Beautiful Anniversary Package
A special movie streamed 150 years to the day of the University’s first lecture will present what RWTH stands for today. Besides Ralph Caspers and Shary Reeves, the movie also features Golden Camera winner Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim.
Fitting for the University’s 150th anniversary: The RWTH Main Building has been all wrapped up like a gift. In fact, it is a form of special protection for the building at Templergraben 55, where the first rector of what was then called "Königliche Rheinisch-Westphälische Polytechnische Schule", August von Kaven, gave a speech marking the opening of the University on October 10, 1870.
150 years later, RWTH Aachen University is inviting the public to remember the founding of the institution separately, yet together, and above all to truly experience current research on sustainability.
Fascinating Insights
Ralph Caspers and Shary Reeves, known from the German childrens' TV programs "Wissen macht Ah!", and the "Sendung mit der Maus", recently came to RWTH Aachen University and gained fascinating insights into the work of the scientists here in Aachen. RWTH alumna Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim also plays an important role in the anniversary movie. The science journalist and YouTuber (MaiLab) has just been awarded the Goldenen Kamera (Golden Camera) and also received the Deutsche Fernsehpreis 2020 (German Television Prize).
“In every crisis lies great opportunity, so we are happy to announce that we will make up for many of our anniversary plans or adapt them to the circumstances. We will start right with the actual birthday of RWTH, where we will create an alternative community experience with our special anniversary movie," explains RWTH Rector Professor Ulrich Rüdiger. The anniversary movie will be streamed on YouTube at 8:15pm on October 10.
RWTH Quiz
The Lernen. Forschen. Machen. Quiz will also be available for the first time on this day. From this point on, everyone can answer fun and fascinating questions on the University and thus approach RWTH in a playful way. The quiz was developed by Media for Teaching, the interfaculty service unit for blended learning at RWTH Aachen University. Further use and development of the format for teaching beyond the anniversary is planned.
The University will be holding the Falling Walls Lab Rhineland event on September 15, in the run-up to the anniversary. The event is a collaboration with Forschungszentrum Jülich, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, the University of Cologne, and the University of Bonn. This international forum for the next generation of young innovators, pioneers, creative minds, and visionaries aims to promote outstanding ideas and get promising scientists from all fields worldwide networking. The Lab will be open to the public from 3pm. Further information on how to access the event can be found here.
