Our Responsibilities

With the University's continued internationalization and growth, the laws and ordinances that have to be considered increase at the same rate. Not only the regulations are getting stricter, but also the prosecution of infractions is handled more rigorously. Furthermore, the freedoms offered to NRW universities by the Higher Education Autonomy Act allow RWTH Aachen to sharpen its profile and position itself favorably in the competitive global marketplace. The subsequent increase in legal complexity, however, demands ever higher levels of legal expertise in order to optimally support the activities in research and teaching.

This is where the Department of Legal Affairs comes in. In our role as interface department within the Central University Administration we are a service provider and point of contact for all the diverse university departments and institutions. In close cooperation with the other departments and administrative divisions we also deal with cross-disciplinary questions competently and relieably.

When drafting contracts we are able to gain the best possible negotiation outcomes for the University and also avoid potential future conflicts right from the start. This is particularly true for our collaborations with other universities or businesses, which are more and more becoming the focus of attention. Should there happen to be conflict or questions of liability after all, we will dismiss false claims and, if necessary, press charges on behalf of the University in return.

AGG Complaints Office and Whistleblower Office

The Department of Legal Affairs is also the point of contact for grievances, in particular grievances pertaining to matters of discrimination according to the General Equal Treatment Act, or AGG. In addition, confidential tips under the Directive (EU) 2019/1937 of the European Parliament and of the Council of October 23, 2019, on the protection of persons who report breaches of Union law (Whistleblowing Directive) can be given here. These tips can be given by phone, email, or in writing.
