Aachen Institute for Advanced Study in Computational Engineering Science

 

Modern simulation tools have become an essential factor in today’s industry. They support increasingly complex planning and optimization in various branches of industry, such as in automobile and aircraft construction, chemical industry or medical engineering. The mere availability of high-performance computing will not suffice to solve the technological and scientific challenges of the future. The main difficulty lies in the mathematical depiction – the modeling – of the technical question and in its realization on the computer via computer science methods.

 

The conventional education within the engineering sciences often does not sufficiently meet these challenges. The Graduate School AICES educates a new generation of doctoral candidates who master these methods and learn how to apply them on technologically and scientifically challenging questions.

It is with great appreciation and pleasure that RWTH Aachen acknowledges the positive decision concerning the follow-up proposal within the Excellence Initiative, comprising a budget applied for of 12 million Euros. The positive appraisal underlines and affirms the exceedingly successful work of the University concerning the excellent promotion of young scientists within the highly topical basic research of the last five and a half years; thus fostering AICES’ innovative aims and scientific concepts for five more years.

Involving three more faculties, the AICES Graduate School will now be able to realize its visions even more intensively. In order to cover further promising research fields, the number of junior research groups and doctoral candidates will be nearly doubled. This enables a more extensive and top-class promotion of young scientists on the basis of outstanding research in the field of Computational Engineering Science - including undergraduates and doctoral candidates as well as junior professors and junior research group leaders.

As a method oriented incubator, AICES will play an important role in the development of innovative basic research as well as application oriented research at RWTH Aachen in the years to come. It strives to deepen the cooperation with Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung in Düsseldorf. The members of the Graduate School AICES are looking forward to working together in the future.
