RWTH Honorary Doctors

Ehrendoktorwürde Klaus Hemmerles

In 1988, at the request of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the Senate awarded Bishop Dr Klaus Hemmerle the honorary academic degree and title of an honorary doctor of philosophy honoris causa. Bishop Hemmerle died on January 23, 1994.

After the doctoral committee of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities was informed that Bishop Hemmerle's involvement in cases of sexual abuse of minors by clerics in the Diocese of Aachen was the subject of a report by the law firm Westpfahl Spilker Wastl from Munich and the University received insights into it, the Senate released the following statement:

"The Senate states in its meeting on July 13, 2023, that it cannot strip an individual of an honorary doctorate posthumously. The Senate would not have awarded Bishop Hemmerle the honorary doctorate if the findings about his handling of cases of sexual abuse in the area of the Diocese of Aachen had already been available at the time of the award."
