NEUROTEC Project Launched

Forschungszentrum Jülich and RWTH Aachen University are joining forces to promote value creation and employment in the Rhineland mining area with the help of neuro-inspired computer technologies.


Research teams from both institutions are already working on novel materials and components for these technologies. In the presence of North Rhine-Westphalia's Science Minister Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen, Thomas Rachel MdB, Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), has now presented the funding documents for the project "Neuro-inspired Artificial Intelligence Technologies for the Electronics of the Future (NEUROTEC)" to Professor Wolfgang Marquardt, Chairman of Forschungszentrum Jülich; Professor Rainer Waser, holder of the RWTH Chair of Materials in Electrical Engineering II and Director of the Peter Grünberg Institute for Electronic Materials; and Thomas Trännapp, Deputy Chancellor of RWTH Aachen University.

The German federal government is funding the research project led by Rainer Waser with more than 13 million euros as part of the Immediate Action Program for Structural Change. Collaborating with various partners from the region, this is Forschungszentrum Jülich's third project aiming to contribute to successful structural change. The project will pool and significantly strengthen the scientific expertise of Forschungszentrum Jülich and RWTH Aachen University in the field of neuro-inspired Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technologies.

The German government is funding the project until mid-November 2021 as part of the Immediate Action Program for Structural Change. At the opening event, State Secretary for Research Thomas Rachel emphasized the project's importance for the region's future viability: "This is a good opportunity for both the people and the economy in the Rhineland and beyond - because the digital transformation is already well underway and is changing our lives rapidly, posing enormous challenges for all of us."
