Information for Students

There are two ways of placing you into a UROP Abroad project:

1) Project Offers by Supervisors

Professors from US and Canadian partner universities and institutes advertise their project proposals in the UROP Projects Database. Read about what they are offering and get in touch with UROP via to find out whether supervisors will be available for the projects – and time periods – you are interested in and for which you think you are suitable. You can work on putting together your application package as soon as you have received a positive reply from us.

The following link leads to the application portal.

We will review your application to make sure it is complete and then send your application documents to the respective supervisor who decides whether to accept you for his or her project.

If you are invited for an inital interview, we will put you and your supervisor in contact with each other so that you can arrange further details, such as weekly time commitment, project duration, workplace, etc.

If the supervisor selects you, we will contact you with the application form for the scholarship.

2) Getting Your Own Research Project Accepted

Either independently or using your department's contacts, you can get in touch with potential supervisors at North American universities or research institutions and ask them to supervise your project activities during your stay. If you find a project supervisor, we will be glad to add the new project to the UROP database. You would then only apply with us in order to potentially receive a scholarship. To do so, please submit the application documents just as you would for a project in the database.

You need at least a grade point average of 3.0 and proof of English skills at at least the B2 level (certificate from the RWTH Language Center, placement test) to be eligible for UROP Abroad.

Scholarships and Conditions

You will not have to pay any fees for your stay at the partner institution. If you are accepted for a scholarship, you will receive 600 Euros per month. The conditions for receiving a scholarship are that you submit a five to seven page research report in English and participate in the UROP Colloquium, to present your research results. If you are unable to participate in the colloquium, you can also give a presentation at the respective institute or chair.

Housing and Visa Questions

Your UROP Abroad project supervisor and the host university's international office will help you with managing visa issues. Please find out early on about the visa conditions for the USA and Canada for your stay. If you have any questions or problems, please get in touch with the UROP coordinator.

Please note:

Double funding for a stay abroad through different RWTH Aachen scholarship programs or other German or international public funding organization such as the German Academic Exchange Service, PROMOS, and scholarships from partner universities and host countries, is not possible.
