Measure 1.2: Fostering Interdisciplinary Research

The most common concept of sustainability consists of the three dimensions: environment, society and economy. Life Cycle Assessment is the method of calculating environmental impacts that a product can have. In Architecture, the product is the "building" and the metrics that measure its environmental impact are usually "Primary Energy Non Renewable" and "Greenhouse Gas Emissions". While these metrics help quantifying the environmental impact, its costs on the society and nature should also be measured. Therefore, leading countries have developed models to assess "hidden environmental costs". What this model does is to provide information on how much cost (for example in Euro) a certain environmental metric (for example producing 1 kg CO2) has.

Task

In the first step, the student is expected to look into details of how a certain environmental cost model (MMG) is developed and can be used. Following, the student should define what the characteristics of the building context it is being used are like. *This student project is closely related to another project on the same topic which has a broader scope but less in depth.

Requirements

Excellent English reading skills, Interest for research in interdisciplinary studies, Being keen on environmental impacts of the built environment
