MoveOn

Microphones record the sound they receive. This includes the sound received directly from the source, but also the reflections of that sound in the room. How sensitive a microphone is to sound coming from specific directions is called the directivity of the microphone. The goal of this project is to develop a horn that will make an omnidirectional microphone (captures sound coming from all directions) much more directional.

Task

In this project, you will design one or multiple horn, based on the frequency range of interest. Then, you will test the effectiveness of the horns by running simulations and building and testing prototypes. The end goal is to compare the effectiveness of different horns and to measure their vertical, horizontal, and front-back directivities.

Requirements

Knowledge of COMSOL or other simulation software is a plus. Knowledge of coding is a plus. Previous lab and electronic experiments are a plus. The project will include moving between different buildings to do the experiments.
