Implants are medical devices, made from one or more biomaterials, which are intentionally placed in the human body to aid with healing processes or to take over the tasks of diseased native tissue. For the long-term success of any implant, a healthy integration into the surrounding tissue is essential. In order to influence the response of human cells and tissues and thus achieve the desired integration, implant surfaces can be modified chemically, biologically, and topographically. In this context current projects in our group are focused on innovative methods to functionalize implant surfaces. During your UROP term you may become part of one of these exciting projects.
- Preparation and characterization of implant materials - Modification of the surfaces (chemically and biologically) - Preparation of tissue samples (cell isolation) - Performing of various assays in cell culture
Knowledge and strong interest in one of the following fields: - Biomedical Engineering - Materials Sciences - Cell Culture Students will work in the lab where patient derived material is regularly used. For this reason, a confirmation that the antibody titer against hepatitis B is higher than 100 IU/L is required.
