MoveOn

Due to their excellent mechanical properties combined with low weight, carbon fibers and carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP) are becoming increasingly important as lightweight materials. However, carbon fibers have a decisive disadvantage: the production costs are too high due to cost inefficient production technologies. For this reason, the fields of application of CFRP are very limited.

Task

Innovative processes and materials have to be integrated into the existing carbon fibre production process to accelerate the manufacturing process and reduce production costs. Further, state-of-the-art monitoring systems within the framework of Industry 4.0 have to be implemented into the production process. You will produce carbon fiber samples on your own and use numerous instruments to analyse various fibre properties. In this way you will adapt and improve the conventional carbon fibre production process.

Requirements

Motivation and interest in the research field of process development and production engineering for carbon fibers and CFRP. Readiness to work in a team.
