MoveOn

LGBTQ+ spaces are created as safe(r) spaces for marginalized groups. But do all queer people feel comfortable and welcome in these spaces? What makes a space “safe(r)”? This project investigates why and how individuals who are part of certain marginalized groups may or may not be excluded from LGBTQ+ spaces and events. We take an intersectional approach looking at gender, ethnicity, dis/ability and other relevant dimensions. Parallel to the advanced class on empirical research methods for human geography students, you will develop your own project on LGBTQ+ issues in the context of North Rhine-Westphalia and conduct your research project under supervision.

Task

At the beginning of your project, we will discuss your interests in regards to the topic and narrow down a focus that fits into the broader framework. You will either do a social media analysis or conduct interviews with LGBTQ+ individuals and organizers in the North Rhine-Westphalia region.

Requirements

basic understanding of and interest in Gender & Diversity studies, willingness to engage with new concepts and methodology, respectful demeanor in contact with interviewees; basic knowledge of empirical social research methods; open for students of human geography, sociology or any other relevant social sciences
