Summer and Winter Schools© Ulla Bidian
There are numerous universities worldwide, who offer summer and winter schools on campus during their lecture-free periods.
The two to six-week stays involve a mix of language courses and cultural studies, and/or subject-specific courses. In addition to gaining valuable specialist knowledge, participation in these courses allows you to deeply experience the language and culture of your destination country and city. In addition, you will be able to participate in numerous leisure activities and excursions to meet and interact with even more people. This gives you the opportunity to build lasting friendships with amazing individuals not only from your destination country but from all over the world.
Under the following links you will find offers from our most important partner universities worldwide. These offers are not complete and will not be updated. If you are interested, please check out the websites of our partner universities and contact them directly.

You can find an overview of the summer schools offered and the application requirements on the IDEA League website.
IGCS Summer and Winter Schools
The Indo-German Centre for Sustainability, IGCS for short, teaches and conducts research on current sustainability challenges in the areas of energy, water and waste management as well as land use and planning issues for rural and urban areas.
Annual Winter Schools in Chennai and Summer Schools in Germany give Master students and doctoral candidates the chance to network with others and learn more about these topics in a multicultural setting.
Up to 30 selected candidates will be supported with a DAAD-scholarship that covers travel expenses and a lump sum. Details about application periods and procedures will be posted on the IGCS website and on the IGCS Facebook page.
IGCS is organized by RWTH Aachen University and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in Chennai, with strong support from the TU9 members University of Stuttgart and Technical University Berlin, as well as Kiel University.
RWTH founded the European Universities of Technology Alliance (ENHANCE) at the end of 2020 together with six other leading technical universities.
In addition to the standard exchange opportunities, ENHANCE also offers shorter formats with summer and winter schools. These annual formats provide participants with an excellent opportunity to discuss current topics in science, technology, and society in an international community. An interesting cultural and social program rounds off the approximately one-week in-person stay, which is usually supplemented by a virtual feature. This year, sustainability and digitalization are in special focus.
Participants also have the opportunity to earn ECTS for their own studies and have their participation listed in the Certificate International. The stay is usually financially subsidized either by the Erasmus+ program of the partner universities or by ENHANCE itself.
Summer School on Gender and Diversity in Science, Technology and Society @TU Berlin - September 2023.
After the great success earlier this year, TU Berlin is offering another Blended Intensive Program (BIP) on this topic. As typical for BIPs, participation is financially supported by Erasmus+. The program consists of an online (September 4-8) and in-person part (September 25-29). Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral students from all disciplines who are interested in gender and diversity issues can participate. Please note, however, that up to five RWTH students can participate.

Overall, the winter school was a remarkable learning experience that I will cherish for a long time. The activities organised during the winter school provide an excellent platform to meet new people from different countries and learn from their experiences and culture. I would highly recommend the winter school to anyone looking to enhance their data literacy skills and network with like-minded professionals.

I had the great opportunity to take part in the Summer School on Climate Action at Warsaw University of Technology. The school follows a free form setting that allows you to explore your own perspective on climate change problems and solutions. While all partner universities were based in Europe, the group itself was multinational, providing a unique platform to explore and learn about diverse cultures. […] P.S. Don’t forget to try the Pączki!
