Learning Applications



Apps refer to all kinds of application software for mobile devices. For educational purposes, they can be used to enable mobile and non-mobile learning on smartphones or tablets and for audience response systems - ARS.

The RWTHApp offers RWTH students, employees, and visitors specially customized features to make everyday life at the university easier. Students, for example, can find information about upcoming events and news from RWTH's central systems and services, such as the L²P teaching and learning portal. It also allows students to download course materials from L²P, so that they have the flexibility to work whenever and wherever they want to.

During lectures, instructors can receive feedback and questions from students via the direct feedback channel on the RWTHApp. Instructors can then choose whether they answer the questions during or after the lecture. Feedback can also be collected using pictures and surveys. The direct feedback channel provides instructors with a means of adding interactive elements to classes with large numbers of students. In particular, it enables students to answer questions and provide feedback anonymously. Instructors can use this feedback to shape the current lecture. With the help of the StudyCrowd-App, students can comment on existing documents in the L²P classrooms as well as ask questions using a pseudonym. Questions and answers can be placed at exact locations in the documents so that it is clear about what the respective question and answer are referring to.

Subject-specific apps offer students the possibility to practice different aspects of the course material and receive qualified and specific feedback. A series of subject-specific apps have been developed in various faculties and departments. Below are a few examples:


Multimedia Learning Applications

A multimedia learning application combines subject content with different media formats (video, animation, graphics, photos, and more) into a multimedia, interactive, and web based format.

The Faculty of Medicine is a pioneer in the creation and use of multimedia learning applications at RWTH.

Such learning applications are used, for example, in the MKG main lecture, which is part of the both the human medicine and dental study programs. This comprehensive learning application covers 18 subject areas/illness cases. Each subject area is divided into sections which provide relevant basic knowledge, describe the specific learning objectives, and include numerous pictures, surgical videos and e-quizzes.

The Audiovisual Media Center AVMZ develops multimedia learning applications for the courses offered by the Faculty of Medicine and on an individual project basis for courses in other RWTH faculties.



E-Books/E-Lecture Notes

E-Books are digital books that can be read using e-book readers or special software on computers, tablets, and smartphones. Textbooks can be redesigned and tailored for use as e-books.

Interactive media such as podcasts and videos can be included and online commenting can be enabled.
