E-exercises and e-tests are electronic exercises and tests with questions that can be automatically corrected. The problem formats include single/multiple choice, correlation, drag and drop on pictures/texts, sequence ordering, true/false, and short answer questions. It is possible to integrate mathematical formulas and multimedia elements into the questions.

The tests can be used both for summative and formative assessments. Randomization options make it possible to personalize the tests. Detailed individual feedback on the answers given shows students how to improve by, for example, explaining errors or providing sources where the material can be reviewed. These tools can encourage students to study independently.

The opportunity to earn bonus points for successfully completing the tests can also help motivate students. These points can be included in the calculation of the final grade. In some cases, successful completion of e-tests is a prerequisite for admission to the final exam.

Digital Problem Sets

Digital problem sets are used for students working individually or as a group to complete and submit homework which is then corrected and commented on by tutors. The complete workflow from publishing the questions and solutions, correcting the homework, and awarding the points can be done digitally. An alternative is that only the questions, solutions and points are published digitally, while the problem-solving and correcting remain paper based.

Electronic Exams

The computer based generation and evaluation of exercises allow instructors to design an exam that is appropriate, efficient, and legal. RWTH Aachen has successfully used the web based platform Online Prüfungssystem, OPS for short, which has long been compatible with all platforms and browsers. It enables examiners to conduct internet and intranet based exams both online and offline.

MfL advises and assists instructors by the development of electronic exams. Seminars on the use of OPS are offered in a collaboration with ExAcT. You can find an example exam here.
