21st alumni-clubs.net Conference at RWTH Aachen

For more than fifteen years the anuual conference of the association of alumni organizations in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland "alumni-clubs.net," acn for short, has been held in different university towns in German-speaking regions. This year the forum is being held at RWTH Aachen from May 6 to 8. Svenja Schulze, minister of innovation, science, and research of the State of NRW is the patron of the 21st acn conference. The annual conference is a forum for all involved in alumni management, career service, fundraising, and related activities at universities and research institutions.

Munich Alumni Visit the FORUM at Knorr-Bremse AG

On May 9, 2016, at 6pm, Munich alumni are visiting the Forum of Knorr-Bremse AG. The Forum is not publicly accessible, but RWTH alumni have the chance to view the Forum. The chairman of the management board of Knorr Bremse Rail/Asia Pacific, Dr. Ansgar Brockmeyer, is an alumnus from RWTH Aachen’s Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives, ISEA for short. Brockmeyer, who currently lives in Hong Kong, will be in Munich at the time of the visit and conduct a guided tour through the museum. Knorr-Bremse AG is the world’s leading manufacturer of braking systems for rail and commercial vehicles, such as ICE trains and trams, for example. Subsequent to the tour, the evening will be concluded with an informal get-together.

Registration for the 2016 Lousberglauf!

The Lousberglauf will once again be held this year on Wednesday, July 13, 2016. The race begins at 7pm. As in previous years the Alumni Team offers all graduates enthusiastic about running a chance to participate.

Interested alumni can get more information or register for the run till May 27, 2016 via email to: alumni@rwth-aachen.de. If registering, please include your personal time for running the Lousberg route.

Two important notes:

  • For organizational reasons, later registrations cannot be accepted.
  • By registering, each participant confirms that they are fit enough to do sports. The University Sports Center will not conduct a medical test to confirm. We recommend all participants actively prepare and train for the race.

ERC Grants for Five RWTH Aachen Researchers

Professor Heinz Pitsch, director of the Institute for Combustion Technology at RWTH, Professor Hermann Ney, head of the Chair of Computer Science 6, and Professors Martin Möller and Matthias Wesseling, scientific director and vice scientific director respectively at DWI – Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials are each receiving an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council, ERC. Professor Barbara Terhal from the Theoretical Physics Teaching and Research Area is receiving a Consolidator Grant. Additionally, RWTH, represented by Professor Jörg Pretz from the Chair of Experimental Physics III B, is involved as a research institution in the ERC Advanced Grant of Professor Hans Ströher, director of the Jülich Institute for Nuclear Physics.

Inaugural Visit of Japanese Consul General

The Japanese consul general, Ryuta Mizuuchi, who has held office in Düsseldorf since November 2015, visited RWTH Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg. The consul general, accompanied by Bundestag representative Dr. Rudolf Henke, learned about the newest developments at the Aachen university, particularly those in the Campus project and collaborations with industry. He demonstrated great interest in RWTH as a leading technical institution. Multiple longterm partnerships and exchange programs exist at all levels. For example, RWTH's relationship with Keio University, in Tokyo/Yokohama reaches back to 1956.

Chinese Consul General Makes Inaugural Visit to RWTH

After Premier Hannelore Kraft and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi opened the new Chinese Consulate General in Düsseldorf in December 2015, the new consul general, Feng Haiyang, made his inaugural visit to RWTH Aachen accompanied by Consul Hang Dongsheng and Consular Attaché Yan Yiwen.

Chances and Challenges of Academic Careers

Staff development of junior researchers was the focus of the symposium "Creating Perspectives – The Future for Junior Researchers." Lectures and panel discussions with experts discussed what chances universities and the industry offer doctoral candidates. Approximately 150 representatives from university administration, staff development, and the equal opportunities sector came to Aachen from all over Germany at the invitation of Professor Doris Klee, vice-rector for human resources management and development at RWTH Aachen. The symposium was organized by Division 4.3 – and the staff unit Integration Team – Human Resources, Gender and Diversity Management, IGaD.

RWTH Seminar "PVD-/CVD Thin-Film Technology"

This three day seminar from May 11 to 13, 2016,offers a systematic overview of the potential of modern PVD and CVD thin-film technology. Backgrounds and principles of different process variants such as the sputter or arc of light process and their possiblities to be implemented, above all in the fields tribology and corrosion protection, will be presented. The target group encompasses engineerings and technical professionals, who wish to obtain an overview of methods and current trends and application possibilities in PVD and CVD technology. Executive MBA at RWTH Aachen

The 13th class for the Executive MBA at RWTH Aachen begins September 2016. The quality of the program design makes it possible to exchange knowledge to the greatest degree. Using various perspectives participants examine the multifaceted conditions, tasks, instruments, and skills of modern management. During the 20 months, students are offered not only a holistic perspective and technical know-how about individual fields but also diverse instruments to implement practically. "Six Sigma" and "Lean" Certificate Courses at RWTH Aachen

In collaboration with the RWTH International Academy, the WZL of RWTH Aachen is offering various extraoccupational certificate courses in the fields Six Sigma and Lean Production, in which both fundamental knowledge as well as knowledge oriented towards the demands of industry will be taught about the optimization of quality management and process design. The courses begin May 2016. The courses are targeted towards professionals and managers at production companies in various fields.

Event Celebrates Foundation of JARA Institutes and Awarding of JARA Junior Researcher Prizes

On April 1, 2016, the RWTH Aachen SuperC represented the spirit of the Jülich-Aachen Research Alliance, JARA. The new JARA institutes, in which Aachen and Jülich scientists research the pressing issues of our time, were presented to the 90-person audience. The directors of the cooperatively-led institutes were also named JARA professors. Excellent junior researchers were honored with the prizes JARA Best Master and JARA Excellent Junior. JARA can record another milestone with the foundation of the first four JARA institutes in the field of brain and information research. Since 2007, the partnership between RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich has stood for a structured path for collaboration between a university and a non-university research institution.

Power-To-X: Entering the Energy Transition with Kopernikus

On April 5, 2016, Johanna Wanka, federal minister of education and research, BMBF, announced the four "Kopernikus Projects for Energy Transition" to receive funding. One of the projects selected is Power-To-X, whch is coordinated by RWTH Aachen, Forschungszentrum Jülich, and DECHEMA. The major project focuses on the storage of excess power into other energy carriers.

IGCS Winter School 2016 in Chennai

How can biodiesel be efficiently, environmentally-friendly, and affordably produced? What chemical and physical properties are important to the storage and stability of biodiesel? What aspects of sustainability should be considered during the production and use of biodiesel? These and other questions occupied around 30 students, who participated in the IGCS Winter School at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, IIT Madras, in Chennai, India, from Februrary 22 to March 4, 2016. Key subjects included production, the characterization and use of fluid fuels, particularly biodiesel, and related technological challenges and political aspects. The IGSC Winter School for the Sustainable Use of Fluid Fuels was organized by IIT Madras, OWI Oel-Waerme-Institute, and RWTH Aachen.

New Testing Bench for Centrifugal Compressor

One of the most powerful pieces of research equipment in Europe will come into operation at RWTH Aachen. It was developed by research institutions and the turbomachinery industry. With a driving power of two megawatts and outstanding technical properties, the new testing bench is one of the most powerful research facilities for centrifugal compressors in Europe. "The testing bench is an outstanding example of successful collaboration between industry and science," explained the head of the institute and professor Peter Jeschke. The testing bench is capable of covering the entire breadth of industrial applications.



Aachen Fencers Successful at the DHM!

This past weekend, the RWTH Aachen University Sports Center, also known as the HSZ, hosted the German University Championships, DHM, in fencing. Around 200 athletes from around Germany faced each other in the disciplines foils, épées, and sabers. The Aachen Women's Team shined in first place in foils and sabers. The men won second place in foils.

Taking Up Studies Made Easy

The Fast-Track Bachelor Admission Program at RWTH supports school students from China and Russia with the the start of their studies in Aachen. Since winter semester 2014/2015, the program has made it possible for graduates with excellent academic performance to enroll in the mechanical engineering Bachelor's program. The International Office looks after the project participants with technical language courses, intercultural trainings, and participation in the BeBuddy Program. The special selection process and intensive mentoring are paying off: the first students are among the best in their cohort.
