Professor Michael Vorländer and the RWTH Aachen Alumni Network cordially invite your to the next alumni meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Alumni Get Together in Berlin – Tour of the BER Airport

We invite you to join us for a visit to the Berlin Brandenburg Airport on October 5, 2016. The tour will give you a look at the planning, logistics, and the construction progress of this large project. Our alumnus, Dr Lutz Weisser, from amd sigma airport management + development GmbH will welcome you personally and accompany the tour, which is offered by the Flughafengesellschaft FBB.

Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to network and talk about experiences and news at RWTH. Exact information about the location and time will be announced. The tour is tentatively planned for the afternoon. You can register using our online form.

Reminder: Alumni Get Together in Saarbrücken

The first get together for RWTH Alumni in Saarland will be held this year in Saarbrücken. A table at Langenfend at St. Johanner Markt has been reserved for 6pm on September 15. Please register by September 11.

RWTH Aachen Graduation Celebration Draws Near

Between 5,000 and 6,000 students complete their studies or doctoral degree at the Aachen university annually. For the third time RWTH will be holding an interfaculty Graduation Celebration on September 19 for its graduates for an unforgettable farewell. The event is made possible solely through sponsors, particularly the primary sponsor, Sparkasse Aachen.

Doctoral Jubilee 2016

On the same day this year’s golden and silver doctoral jubilarians will convene to celebrate the 50th and 25th annivesary of their doctorate. The jubilarians are invited based on the date of their doctorate certificate: this year, the classes of 1965 and 1990 will receive their renewal certificate.


Alumni Spotlight

RWTH Professors Appointed Directors of Fraunhofer Institute

At the beginning of August 2016, Dr.-Ing. Peter Knott and Professor Dirk Heberling assumed the direction of the Fraunhofer Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Techniques FHR in Wachtberg.

Together, they are taking over for Prof. Joachim Ender, who is retiring after successfully leading the institute since 2003. Professor Heberling has been a member of the Fraunhofer FHR advisory board since 2009. In 2008, he was appointed chair at the Institute for High Frequency Technology at RWTH Aachen and was later named director of the epononymous institute.

Johanna Wanka Visited JARA Section on Brain Research

The future of life in old age – this is the topic of Minister Johanna Wanka' summer tour. On July 28, 2016, she visited the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance – JARA. Researchers in basic and clinical research are conducting interdisciplinary work to learn how how healthy aging is linked to the functions of the brain.

Mini MBA at RWTH Aachen – Continuing Education at the Highest Level

The current market dynamic and technological change require interdisciplinary skills and well founded management skills and knowledge. The Mini MBA at RWTH Aachen offers the possibility to refresh and advance your own management skills. The certificate program uses an integral approach with learning modules, in which a topic – based on the content from the RWTH Executive MBA program – is explored and practically tested. It is possible to begin any time.

RWTH Engineering Among the Best in Worldwide Ranking

RWTH Aachen is ranked among the top universities in the engineering sciences. This was confirmed in the “Academic Ranking of World Universities” published on August 15, 2016, The so-called “Shanghai ranking,” conducted since 2003, is one of the major worldwide university rankings. It evaluates universities based on their publication output and number of major scientific awards, among other parameters.

German-Korean Collaboration

A delegation from the Korean Seoul National University, SNU, visited RWTH Aachen as part of the workshop Advances in the Science and Engineering of Functional Materials. The two universities can look back on many years of collaboration in research and teaching. A cooperative agreement to fund the exchange of students and scientists was adoped in 2008. Since then the collaboration has continued to grow and expand.



Institute for Mineral Resources Machine Technology Makes Donation

The Institute auctioned several models of excavators and a trip to a traditional St. Barbara’s festival in Poland, which celebrates the patron saint of miners. The institute has now donated the auction proceeds: Hortus Dialogus hospice in Nideggen-Abenden and Café Zuflucht, a refugee support and advising center in Aachen, have received 1510 Euros each.

Student Initiative Requests Support

The student iniative Enactus Aachen e.V. aims to use entrepreneurship to improve the standard and quality of life of those in need. Their project won a statewide competition this June and will participate at the end of September in World Cup Deutschland, thus representing RWTH and FH Aachen on the worldwide state in Toronto, Canada.

Enactus Aachen e.V. is now looking for supporters and partners, to help bring the following projects one step further:

  • "AMaPro“ – a mechanical, low-tech arm prosthetic developed by a student. Through cost-effective 3D printing, it is expected to allow children and adolescents lead a normal life in former crisis regions.
  • "Samaki“ – sustainable fish farming, which has been constructed at two sites in Uganda so far. However, it is supposed to reach more people in the future and provides not only nutrition rish in protein but also improves basic local income.
  • "ReBubble“ – a recycling project focused on a sustainability, in which hand soap from local hotels is made in collaboration Lebenshilfe Aachen and its workshops for disabled persons.

Blood Drive Dates at the Couvenhalle

80 percent of all Germans will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to secure the supply of blood for those in need. Students and interested Aachen residents have the possibility to donate blood on the RWTH campus. The University Hospital Aachen is organizing multiple blood drives in the next months at Couvenhalle, Kármánstraße 17 bis 19. The next is on Friday, September 16, 2016, 11:30am to 7pm.
