Farewell to RWTH Aachen Graduates

The Aachen dressage stadium was filled with a sense of anticipation and joy on Saturday, when more than a thousand graduates of all the different faculties at RWTH Aachen were given an affectionate send-off into the new stage in their lives with the locally flavored farewell motto “Tschö Wa.“ With the temperature a balmy 25 degrees Celsius, the graduates filed into the stadium grouped according to faculty. Approximately 4,000 relatives, friends and guests from University and local politics cheered them on, while Koninklijke Philharmonie from the Dutch town of Bocholtz, as in the years prior, provided the fitting soundtrack for the grand entrance of the nine different faculties respectively. More than 160 of them received special honors due to their outstanding achievements. Gold and silver jubilarians, who began their academic careers 50 or 25 years ago and have since become successful leaders in the areas of industry and science, were also included in the ceremony. M5BAT Modular Battery Storage System Now in Operation in Aachen

After a year of construction the M5BAT modular battery storage system began operations today in Aachen. Professor Dirk Uwe Sauer, who was responsible for the overall project and operation of M5BAT and works at the RWTH Aachen Institute for Power Generation and Storage Systems, PGS, spoke on the importance of the project to energy research:"Right from the start more than 25,000 battery cells will intesively and individually monitored in six strings with varying lithium ion battery technologies and four different lead-acid battery strings. This will provide us with valuable information about ageing, reliability, and lifetime. Simultaneously, we wish to use intelligent battery management to demonstrate how the entire operation can be optimally operated with a hybrid system of different technologies." The energy storage system is located near a transformer station and RWTH's research institutions.

New Wheat Strain Resistant to Mildew

A group of researchers headed by professor Ralph Panstruga has made a significant breakthrough in the fight against powdery mildew. Through targeted crossing they have cultured a new wheat strain to be the base material for the development of new types that would also be resistant to fungal infestation. A professional article about the research project will be appearing in the September issue of the Planet Biotechnology Journal* and will make seed producers and cultivators sit up and take notice. Mildew is responsible for crop failures worldwide and requires regular use of fungicides.

STEM Taster Studies for Female High School Graduates During the Fall Break in NRW

The still low percentage of women in technical and natural science courses of study demonstrates that many young women still don't consider choosing studies that have been dominated by men a natural choice. Young women don't have less potential than men to embark on a professional career in the creative and interdisciplinary world of technology and natural sciences. In order to sensitize women to their skills, the traditional "STEM Taster Studies for Female School Students" is being held from October 17 to 19, 2016. The project offers a look at the different fields in engineering and the natural sciences. Focus is placed on participation in two workshops at RWTH institutes and contact with female scientists. Presentations about studies overall, applying, and career possibilities round out the offer.

Further information and registration for the event can be found in German at Schnupperstudium.
