Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials Inaugurated
The Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials, AMIBM, has officially been opened on the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen. The AMIBM stands for a new form of collaboration between Maastricht University (UM), RWTH Aachen and the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology (IME) in Aachen. The binational institute has moved into a 1500 square metre facility on the Brightlands Chemelot Campus, where approximately 50 staff from UM, RWTH and the Fraunhofer IME now work on developing new biomaterials. In these laboratories, sustainable materials are being tested, which, for instance, have been created with the help of deep-sea bacteria on the basis of waste products from mechanically peeled shrimp.
Five Years of AMS – Embarking on a New Era in Astroparticle Physics
For five years now, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) has been orbiting our planet aboard the International Space Station ISS, 400 kilometres above the Earth's surface. The AMS took about 15 years to construct, weighs over 7 tons, and is valued at about 1.5 billion euros – thus, it is the largest basic research experiment aboard the ISS. The German research institutions participating in the project are RWTH Aachen, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and Forschungszentrum Jülich. Recently, the spokesperson for the AMS project, Nobel Prize winner Samuel C. C. Ting from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, provided a summary of the first five years of the AMS project at the European research center CERN.
Social Responsibility and Innovation
How can innovation and social responsibility successfully be combined, resulting in sustainable, socially accepted products that succedd on the market? 30 students of the IDEA League universities – including Chalmers University of Technology, TU Delft, ETH Zürich, Politecnico di Milano, and RWTH Aachen – participated in a competition surrounding the topic of “Social Responsibility and Innovation.” The students had to solve a task posed by the Adidas Group. To this purpose, the students were familiarized with “Design Thinking” principles. In an iterative process, the students developed a protoype, which they subsequently presented to a group of participating experts.
Securing and Disseminating Digital Knowledge
These days, digital data are a product and a focus of research. RWTH scientists produce them daily in large amounts and great variety. Sustainable securing and archiving these data is a challenge in many ways – strategic, organizational and technological.
RWTH Aachen has accepted this challenge and has formed a special "Research Data Team." Experts from the IT Center, from the University Library and from the administrative Research Funding division have all joined forces to this end.
