Win VIP Tickets for RWTH Sports Show
The University Sports Show takes place each winter semester in the Königshügel sports hall and offers the opportunity to get to know the University Sports Center's diverse program through artistic performances. We are raffling off five pairs of VIP tickets for this year's show to RWTH alumni. However you must answer the following question:
How many people participate in the University Sports Center's sports and movement courses eahc week?
Tickets will be raffled off among those with the correct answer. Winners will be notified as soon as possible.
Regional Alumni Meeting in Munich
The Munich branch of Haus der Technik e.V. Essen is organizing the 16th RWTH Alumni meeting in Munich on February 11, 2014, and invites all RWTH Aachen alumni to participate. The program includes a visit to Knorr-Bremse, a worldwide leading manufacturer in brake systems for rails and commercial vehicles. The meeting begins at 5pm.
2014 North America Meeting in El Paso
It's that time again: The RWTH Alumni Network in North America is holding its traditional annual meeting from May 1 to 4, 2014, and invites all alumni, students, exchange students, and friends of RWTH Aachen in the area to come to El Paso, Texas. The program includes a visit to military bases in and around El Paso, above all the Aeronautical Training Center of the German Air Force on Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, New Mexico, and a visit to the University of Texas.

Vice-Counsel Naoyoshi Yoneyama
Naoyoshi Yoneyama completed his Master's studies in European Studies at RWTH Aachen from 2009 to 2011. He recently returned to the Aachen university for an informal visit as the new Vice-Consul of the Japanse General Consulate in Düsseldorf. Prof. Dr. Jun Okuda, Rector's Delegate for Japan, and representatives from the International Office, the Department of Technology Transfer, and the Alumni Team received the young diplomat in an initial informative exchange about future collaborations.
Professor Marquardt to Become New Chairman of the Board in Jülich
In a press release on January 10, 2014, Forschungszentrum Jülich announced its decision to appoint Professor Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Marquardt, currently Chairman of the German Council of Science and Humanities, as the new Chairman of the Board of the Forschungszentrum. The center's Advisory Board has adopted the resolution.
RWTH Alumna Nominated as WDR Editor-in-Chief
Well-known television journalist Sonia Mikich, who completed a degree in political science, sociology, and philosophy at RWTH Aachen, is to become the new editor-in-chief of WDR television. WDR director, Tom Buhrow, submitted his nomination of Mikich to the Administrative Council, according to a recent press release from the channel. In the case of successful appointment negotiations, the 62-year- old will take office on May 1.
Recognition for Two RWTH Researchers
RWTH researchers Prof. Dr.-Ing. Janina Fels and Dr. phil. Christoph Michels have been accepted into the "Junges Kolleg" of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities, and the Arts. The Kolleg was founded with the support of the Stiftung Mercator in 2006 to promote young scholars and scientists.

Presentation on Electromobility
Peter Krams, Project Director of Innovation Projects in E-Mobility at BMW AG, is speaking on Monday, February 3, 2014, at 6:15pm, in lecture hall Fo7 in Karmán Auditorium. The topic is BMW Project i – Electromobility and the Difference between Theory and Practice. The lecture is taking part as part of the automotive engineering seminar, which is regularly organized by the RWTH Institute of Automotive Engineering. All interested individuals are welcome to attend!
Technology Transfer and Talent Development
RWTH Aachen University is one of eight worldwide strategic partner universities of Siemens AG and collaborates with the company in the “Center of Knowledge Interchange,” CKI for short. Now the University and Siemens have signed a framework agreement on contract research. After the establishment of the Siemens research areas “Sielectric Powertrain” and “Rare Earths” in 2011 and 2012, the new framework agreement represents a major milestone in the ten-year cooperation between the two partners.

Heitfeld Awards for Young Researchers
Each year, the Professor Karl-Heinrich Heitfeld Foundation presents awards to outstanding Master’s graduates and doctoral candidates in the Faculty of Georesources and Materials Engineering. The Heitfeld Award was awarded for the 19th time, recognizing outstanding geoscience accomplishments made by students and doctoral candidates. At the 2013 award ceremony opened by RWTH Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg, Professor Thomas Rüde presented the dissertation award to Dr. Yves Gensterblum. Charitra Jain, Alexander König, Alexander Raith, and Katharina Wimmers received awards for their Master’s theses.
Temporary Seminar Building
In order be able provide a sufficient number of teaching and study rooms for the over 40000 RWTH students, several construction projects on the university campus are currently underway. Due to the delay in the completion of the new lecture hall center on Claßenstraße, the University has built a temporary lecture hall at Republikplatz which seats over 1000 students. Over the next few months, a temporary seminar building will be built on the parking lot behind the so-called Reiff Museum in Schinkelstraße. This building will be 75 meters long and 12 meters wide.
"Die neue Lust am Material in der Architektur" – Traveling Exhibition Opens
Materials science in architecture and civil engineering is anything but boring. Günter Carpus, Executive Director of Carpus & Parner, emphasized this at the exhibition Anything goes! Die neue Lust am Material in der Architektur, which recently opened in his company on Campus Melaten. Visitors have till February 21, to inform themselves about the new developments in the field of building materials, such as green algae as facade elements, that regulate the temperature of a house, or wood elements, that close and open based on the moisture in the environment. This presentation was designed as a traveling exhibition by the "M:AI“, Museum für Architektur und Ingenieurkunst“.
RWTH Certification Course “Battery and Electric Motor Production"
The transition to electrical powertrain requires new production strategies. The production of the core components of lithium ion batteries and of electric motors plays a central role. Together with the Chair of Production Management at the RWTH Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering, RWTH International Academy offers the certificate course "Battery and Electric Motor Production".
In Course I on May 13 and 14, 2014, participants are given a comprehensive look at the processes, technologies, and challenges in the production of lithium ion batteries for use in electric vehicles.
In Course II on May 15 and 16, 2014, participants learn to consider the production process of electric motors holistically.

The keep in touch is now available as an interactive e-magazine for iPads and Android tablet PCs, starting with the past issue, Issue 55. The issue can be downloaded for free in the Apple Store and in the Google PlayStore.
