Homecoming at the Faculty of Architecture
The RWTH Aachen Faculty of Architecture is once again opening its doors to the public for its annual exhibit, from April 23 to 26, 2015, to offer a look at its current work. The exhibit shows the Faculty's best premiered designs in the foyer of the completely renovated Reiff Museum. The teaching units will turn into open ateliers and will supplement the spectrum with publications and overviews of their teaching and research activities. The exhibit will be accompanied by numerous talks, performances, and panel discussions with invited guests, and the graduation celebration on Friday. An additional highlight sure to be of great interest to the faculty's alumni is the first Reiff-Museum Homecoming, to which alumni are invited to attend on Saturday, as well as a series of short presentations or pecha kucha about "Life after Reiff" starting at 4pm. During the reception to follow, attendees have the possibility to meet old friends and make new ones. 65 Years of the Student Dorm T39
The student dorm at Templergraben 39 – T39 for short – is celebrating its 65-year anniversary on April 25 and 26, 2015. All former residents are welcome to attend. The celebration begins on Saturday, April 25, 2015, with a tour of the cathedral and cathedral treasury. Meeting point: 1pm in front of the SuperC, Templergraben 57. The program will continue afterwards in the SuperC with coffee, cake, and a buffet, and will end with dancing and music in the "Bistro" in the basement of the Main Building. Adolf von Baeyer Commemorative Coin Awarded to Carsten Bolm
Every two years the German Chemical Society, GDCh, awards the Adolf von Baeyer commemorative coin to scientists for their outstanding work in the field of organic chemistry. This year the coin was awarded to Professor Dr. rer. nat. Carsten Bolm from the RWTH Institute of Organic Chemistry for his "significant contributions to the asymmetrical catalysis with transition metals."
Software Tool of the Year
The SLX multicore programming solution by Silexica Software Solutions GmbH, a spin-off company from the Institute of Communications Technology and Embedded Systems (ICE) at RWTH Aachen, was named the most innovative software tool of the year by an international jury of experts at Embedded World 2015 at the end of February. The renowned Embedded Award is annually awarded at the fair in Nuremberg, the largest embedded systems fair worldwide. "We are very happy to have received this important award from among more than 500 international exhibitors here in Nuremberg," said Maximilian Odendahl, co-founder and CEO of Silexica.

RWTH Seminar “PVD-/CVD Thin-Film Technology”, May 20 to 22, 2015
This three day seminar offers a systematic overview of the potential of modern PVD and CVD thin-film technology. Presentations by experts will be supplemented with contributions from practice, which illustrate concrete examples from the field of tool coating and the automobile industry. Furthermore, you will independently conduct, interpret, and evaluate different test processes on various equipment at the Institute of Surface Technology. RWTH Seminar Hoch and Medium Switch Gear and Components from June 29 to 30, 2015

New Program Available for RWTH Studies for Senior Citizens
The new course schedule for RWTH Aachen studies for senior citizens is now available – a wide variety of topics and activities are available for the Summer Semester of 2015. For 100 Euros a semester - the fee may be waived in certain cases - senior citizen students can choose from the entire program and put together a comprehensive schedule. Only a few courses require additional costs. Studies for senior citizens begins with an orientation event on APril 8, 2015, 10am to 12:30pm, in seminar room 603, 6th floor, HKW 5 (former Heizkraftwerk), Wüllnerstraße 1, in Aachen. Registration ends April 24, 2015.

HICAST - Excellence for Sustainable Technologies
Henkel and RWTH Aachen are starting a new type of collaboration to work together on the research and development of resource-efficient detergents and cleaning agents. Bruno Piacenza, member of the Board and Executive Vice President Laundry & Home Care at Henkel, and RWTH Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg have now officially opened the Innovation Campus in Aachen. Henkel is investing up to five million Euros in the research cooperation.
RWTH Aachen and Osaka University in Japan Celebrate Ten Years of Collaboration
RWTH Aachen and Japanese Osaka University are celebrating ten years of collaboration, which has served to expand academic exchange. The international graduate school "Selectivity in Chemo- and Biocatalysis – SeleCa" has been a component of the relationship for a long time. It has existed since 2000 and was extended till 2019 by both the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science for Osaka University and the German Research Society for RWTH Aachen. As part of the ten-year anniversary of the collaboration, RWTH Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg is meeting fellow university leader, President Toshio Hirano, in Osaka in April. There they will extend the successful collaboration for another five years.
RWTH and KIAT Sign Memorandum of Understanding
RWTH Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg and Jae-Hoon Chung, president of Korea Institute of Advancement of Technology, KIAT for short, in Seoul, have signed a memorandum of understanding in Aachen. The goal is to promote the exchange of scientists and engineers, conduct joint research activities, and improve the exchange of information. KIAT is an organization of the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, and promotes technological cooperations worldwide. The Korean delegation also visited the RWTH Institute of Textile Technology, with whom joint projects have already been conducted.
Online Platform Helps with Renovation of Heating Systems
RWTH spin-off company Modern Energy Consulting, modEnerco, has developed a web-based system, which offers building owners suggestions for possibilities to renovate heating systems as well as information about tradespeople. Energy conservation in buildings is a popular topic. Not least because both the environment and wallet benefit. "Many heaters in Germany are over 20 years old and are no longer up to the current state of technology," says Niklas Rotering, executive manager of modEnerco. "Approximately 880,000 new heaters are installed every year." With this in mind, entrepreneuers Rotering and Florian Rocktäschel developed the online platform modEnerco.
Scientists Discover Protected Current Channels on the Surface of Crystals
A team of scientists from RWTH Aachen, Forschunszentrum Jülich, TU Dresden, the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids, and the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden have documented evidence of channel-shaped current paths on the surface of a crystal. These paths are protected by the volume of the crystal.

RWTH Confirms Its Position in the THE World Reputation Rankings
After ranking among the TOP100 of THE Reputation Ranking of the British journal "Times Higher Education“ last year for the first time, RWTH Aachen has retained its status as one of the world's top higher education institutions worldwide, as published in the 2015 issue of the ranking. As in the last years, the rankings list is dominated by Anglo-American universities. Apart from RWTH Aachen, only five other German universities are placed in the top 100.
