New Issue of the "keep in touch“ Alumni Magazine

Her love for an RWTH student in electrical engineering brought Diana Lutz from St. Ingberg in the Saarland to Aachen, where she enrolled in a Master’s degree program in English studies, sociology and German linguistics. “But this was not the only reason,” she explains, “just as important to me was that English Studies in Aachen achieved very good results in the ranking published by the weekly newspaper 'Die Zeit'."

Today, Diana is Senior Strategic Planner at the BBDO advertising agency in Düsseldorf. In the current issue of the “keep in touch” RWTH alumni magazine, she reports on the perks and the challenges of her job.

Rector's Cup 2015

It was the 13th edition of RWTH’s golf tournament for alumni, members, and friends of RWTH Aachen, hosted by Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg and Professor Reinhart Poprawe. A novelty this year, as part of the event, a golf taster course made it possible for novices to get acquainted with this fascinating sport. The Rector’s Cup is also a fundraising event to support the RWTH Education Fund, After this year’s tournament, the Education Fund is able to offer three more scholarships and received further donations. A big ‘thank you’ to all donors and supporters!

Talk: "The Sacred Mountains of Nepal"

Twelve. That's how many expeditions RWTH alumnus Dr. Damien Francois has gone on to the Himalayan peaks since 2005. His book "Die Heilige Berge von Nepal" is based on his travels. In his talk on Friday, July 10, 7pm, in the Generali Hall of the SuperC the author and cultural anthropologist will not only show impressive photos but also address the incorrect clichés – especially in the West – about this mountainous region. He will also discuss the most recent earthquake catastrophe from April, which he personally experience at the Mount Everest base camp.

Lousberglauf 2015: Favorites Win in the Alumni Group

At this year’s Lousberglauf run, the winners among the alumni group were already considered among the favorites before the race started: In past races, Helge Heers and Katharina Apfel were among the top runners. Helge Heers came in first in 2011 and 2013, and again this year he was able to win the race in the alumni group with a time of 20:24 minutes. Among the alumni men, Nikolaos Servos came in second, and Dominik Raudszus third. Among the alumni women, Katharina Apfel was victorious with a time of 28:06 minutes; Martina Müller and Maren Lunkenheimer came in second and third.

The RWTH Alumni team participated in the run for the fourteenth time – this year, 50 alumni registered for the running competition. By now, the Lousberglauf has established itself as a regular RWTH Alumni event.

Farewell to this Year's Computer Science Graduates

Under the direction of the Chair of Computer Science 2, the RWTH Department of Computer Science held this year's summer festival under the motto of "Karriere – Kluge Köpfe – Coole Party," which also served as graduation celebration for computer science graduates from the past and current semesters.

Temporary Employment in Academia: RWTH Rector Invited as Expert

In a public hearing, the Parliamentary Committee for Education, Research and Technology Assessment discussed the topic of “Support of Early-Career Researchers and Amendment of the Act on Temporary Employment in Academia”. RWTH Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg was invited to the hearing as an expert and a representative of the higher education institutions.

Prof. Tae Jin Kang Receives RWTH Aachen Kármán Fellowship

Professor Tae Jin Kang, Seoul National University, was awarded the RWTH Aachen University Kármán Fellowship on July 17, 2015. Professor Kan is one of the most renowned professors in textile research in Korea. His involvement in the project Dream2Lab2Fab has been the foundation for collaboration with the Institute of Textile Engineering, ITA, at RWTH Aachen University.

NRW Minister President at RWTH

As part of her summer tour "NRW 4.0" of universities and research institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia, NRW Minister President Hannelore Kraft visited RWTH Aachen Campus. Her visit focused on current research on "Industry 4.0" and its consequences on the world of work. She was accompanied by Karl Schultheis, Spokesperson of the SPD State Parliamentary group in the Committee for Innovation, Science and Research. At the beginning of the guided tour, RWTH Vice-Rector for Industry and Business Relations, Prof. Malte Brettel, gave an overview of the application oriented activities of the University and its institutes, explaining that "establishing the RWTH research campus will result in the creation of up to 10,000 direct and indirect employment positions."

Research Funding for RWTH Physicists

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research, BMBF, provides funding for the further development of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. RWTH physicists have now been granted 9.4 million Euros in funding for their involvement in the international research project. "We support the participation of excellent universities in a worldwide leading research facility and thus make it possible for our young researchers to participate in international top-level research,” explains Parliamentary Secretary of State Thomas Rachel, who presented the grant certificate to RWTH Aachen University.

New Photonics Research Center

In July, NRW Science Minister Svenja Schulze came to the ground breaking and topping out ceremonies for the new photonics building on RWTH Aachen Campus: On a 4300 square meter area, the new Center for Digital Photonic Production Systems (CDPP) is now under construction. The center will investigate how light can be used as a tool in industrial production, in laser processes or 3D printing, for example.

Replacing Fossil Raw Materials

The RWTH Themen magazine and an internet platform provide information on the RWTH profile area Energy, Chemical & Process Engineering, which is concerned with energy and materials conversion and usage. The supply of sustainable energy and materials is one of the major challenges of the future. The profile area Energy, Chemical & Process Engineering, ECPE for short, investigates two important aspects of this challenge: how to improve energy and material efficiency and the transition to renewable resources.

Top Rankings for Mechanical and Industrial Engineering

Wirtschaftswoche's university rankings from July 17, 2015, once again certified RWTH Aachen's top reputation among German companies. Human resources managers gave a very good evaluation for Aachen graduates in both the natural and engineering sciences. RWTH’s Vice-Rector for Industry and Business Relations, Prof. Malte Brettel, is particularly pleased with the success of the University’s School of Business and Economics, which entered the top ten in Germany for the first time. After a year in second place in 2014, RWTH Aachen regained the top position among German universities in mechanical engineering and industrial engineering.
