Retrospect: 2015 Graduation Celebration

In the same arena where the amazing horse Totilas gave his farewell performance for the FEI European Championships, around 1,300 graduates from the Aachen university recently had their grand appearance. "We anxiously anticipated this day and look forward to a wonderful celebration for all those who worked hard for their degree at RWTH." Student representative Thorben Lorzen, opened the inter-faculty Graduation Celebration with these words. The event took place for the second time at the Aachen dressage stadium. Parents, relatives, friends, and guests from politics and industry applauded from the occupied stands as the students processed by faculty into the stadium. RWTH Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg congratulated the graduates on their Bachelor, Master, and doctoral degrees. "Society expects you to perform. You are capable of achieving this," said Schmachtenberg. Professor Franz Pischinger, who received the Aachen Engineering Award the day before the celebration (see below), spoke about his experiences over the course of his work and long professional career.

Retrospect: Doctoral Jubilee 2015

At the 2015 Graduate Celebration, RWTH alumni celebrated their golden and silver jubilees together with outstanding graduates and doctoral candidates who received the Springorum Medal or Borchers Badge. Continued Education & Career

Extraoccupational Continuing Education in Quality Management

In collaboration with the RWTH Aachen Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering, the RWTH International Academy is offering extraoccupational continuing education to improvement quality management in production. Participants will learn fundamental knowledge and information targeted towards the industry's requirements regarding process optimization and product development in both certificate courses, Six Sigma Green Belt and Design for Six Sigma Green Beld. Each course has two modules, during which participants will acquire the key abilities to indepedently conduct improvement and development projects and apply and further teach fundamental (Design for) Six Sigma methods.

Six Sigma Green Belt: Module I from November 10 to 13, 2015 and Module II from February 16 to 19, 2016
Design for Six Sigma Green Belt: Module I from November 3 to 6, 2015, and and Module II from February 23 to 26, 2016

Science & Business

3D Comptence Center for Digital Fabrication

As part of the Regio.NRW initiative, 44 projects to foster economic development of the regions in North Rhine-Westphalia were selected for funding. The proposal for a 3D Competence Center for Digital Fabrication, jointly submitted by Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Hochschule Rhein-West, and RWTH Aachen University, succeeded in the competition. At RWTH Aachen’s Fab Lab, operated by the Media Computing Group, about one million Euros in funding will support the research of novel user interfaces for easier 3D design and fabrication in the context of Personal Design and Personal Fabrication.

RWTH's Outstanding Research Recognized with Top Funding überzeugt mit herausragender Forschung

The DFG funding atlas is evidence that the Aachen university is on top for funding in the engineering sciences. The German Research Foundation, DFG for short, published the most current issue of its research atlas on Thursday, September 3, 2015. RWTH Aachen once again received funding from the prominent research sponsor. Over the three years included in the report RWTH obtained a total of 272.5 million Euros for projects.

Innovative Materials Concepts for the Future Body Engineering Methods

Over 200 experts attended the Aachen Body Engineering Days 2015 on September 22 and 23, 2015. Renowned speakers from industry and research presented the newest bodies and concepts during presentations and the professional exhibition. The international professional conference, which was held for the eighth time by the Institute of Automotive Engineering, ika, at RWTH Aachen, has grown into an important meeting point for body engineering experts. Using the 18 talks as a foundation, the more than 200 visitors discussed current and future developments in body engineering including the fact that lightweight construction is taking on an increasingly important role.

TU9 Delegation Visits the United States

A high-profile delegation from TU9, including RWTH rector Ernst Schmachtenberg, travelled to the United States to participate in the GAIN conference in San Franscisco and visit several prestigious US universities. At information events taking place in San Francisco, Atlanta, and Pittsburgh, the quality of "German Engineering" was discussed.

More Women in Engineering and Natural Sciences

The low percentage of women that continues to persist in the technical and natural science courses of study shows that studies dominated by men thus far are still not yet a natural choice for many young women. In order raise women's or rather girls' awareness of their potential skills, STEM Taster Studies for Female Pupils is taking place from October 19 to 21, 2015.
