New Record High for RWTH Student Enrollment

8,241 new students enrolled for the 2015/16 semester. This raises the total number of students to a record high of 43,721. Compared to last year, the rate of increase has remained relatively stable with an increase of 0.6 percent or 1,400 students. 2,815 of the new students are female, thus making up 34 percent of the new students.

RWTH's Quality in Teaching Initiative Once Again Successful

Student enrollments in the winter term of 2015/2016 are at a record high – currently, 2.7 million students are enrolled at German universities. In order to make sure that these students are facing favorable study conditions, the federal and state governments have launched the second phase of the Quality Pact for Teaching (“Qualitätspakt Lehre”). 174 higher education institutions have applied for continued funding in the initiative, and the universities whose concepts are approved for funding will receive about 830 million Euros until 2020 to further improve teaching and learning and the supervision of students.

Full Cohort Once Again for New M.Sc. Lasers in Dentistry and Excellent Final Exams

Once again all 24 spots in the program are filled by dentists from around the world. This shows yet again, how strongly this worldwide renowned Lasers in Dentistry program has established itself in international circles among dentists. The new course began September 21.

The successful graduates in the previous cohort celebrated at the Master's ceremony with their family and friends in the RWTH Aachen Main Building. We are delighted to announce that two young female dentists from Yemen and Portugal completed the Master's in Lasers in Dentistry with honors.

RWTH Seminars "Introduction to Aluminium Technology" & "PVD-/CVD Thin Film Technology"

We cross paths with useful metals in diverse fields of application in the manufacturing and processing industry. While the number of ways to use many materials is growing, so are the demands made on professional and management personnel, who must expand their skills in treatment and processing technology. Both RWTH seminars Introduction to Aluminium Technology (March 21 to 24, 2016) and PVD-/CVD Thin Film Technology (May 11 to 13, 2016) offer you an overview of teh status quo of research and innovative treatment and coating technologies.

Science & Business

"Love at Second Sight"

The gases carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen (H2) are an unlikely couple: While carbon dioxide, as a waste product of the fossil fuel use, is seen as a climate killer, hydrogen is considered a beacon of hope for the use and storage of energy from regenerative sources. Even from a chemical prospective, the two molecules couldn't be more different: hydrogen is highly reactive, as proven by the well-known detonating gas reaction. In contrast, carbon dioxide has less of a tendency to form bonds. It only temporarly forms carbonic acid when it bonds with water. "The most recent research results have demonstrated a clear, suprising potential of this combination for the production of components and products in the chemical value added chain. A prerequisite is that modern catalysts as a kind of matchmaker enable love at second sight," reports Professor Walter Leitner.

RWTH Seeks to Increase Vaccination Rates

The German Research Foundation is providing 397,000 Euros in funding for a joint research project of RWTH Aachen and the University of Erfurt on the topic of “vaccine hesitancy,” a skepticism towards or even refusal of vaccines despite wide availability of vaccination services. The research project seeks to identify the underlying causes of vaccine hesitancy and propose measures to counteract this trend. The funding has been granted for three years.

Neutrino Physics Receives Yet Another Award

After two scientists were awarded with the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics for their research on neutrinos, another prestigious award was given to neutrino physics. The renowned "Breakthrough Prize for Fundamental Physics" was awarded for the groundbreaking discovery of neutrino oscillations, which could revolutionize the standard model of particle physics. The prize, endowed with three million US dollars, will be equally split among five international research groups, including the T2K experiment, in which the RWTH Aachen Institute of Physics III is involved.

Investigating the Causes of Aggression

The German Research Foundation, DFG, is establishing four international research training groups, including one titled "Neuronal Foundations of the Modulation of Aggression and Impulsiveness within Psychopathology" at RWTH Aachen. Starting in April 2016, the training group will receive approximately four million Euros for the next four and a half years.

RWTH Receives Ökoprofit Certificate

The RWTH Institute of Power Plant Technology, Steam and Gas Turbines and the Department of Facility Management at RWTH Aachen received the Ökoprofit certificate at Energeticon in Alsdorf.
